Secondary boost repairing

I'm sure that my secondary boost isn't boosting and I don't have the time to fix this myself. Anyone have any idea what it costs for someone to fix this problem? I would be going to a specialized rotary place (mzmperformance here in Austin).

whats the boost pattern? it all depends on what they have to do to fix it. RP in dallas will charge anywhere form $200-$500. Best to call them. get the # of the website. www.rx7.com

I don't have a boost guage, I've been reluctant to spend 200 bucks on a diagnostic tool. Anyway, will not having a boost guage be a problem when they try to fix it?

Even if you get a cheap $35 autometer gauge, it will be better than nothing. These cars REQUIRE using a boost gauge and water temp gauge (or stock gauge linearization). Don't cheap out on standard reliability items.

I don't understand why it's so neccessary to have one. If I did have one I would still go to a shop to get the the problem fixed. Couldn't someone just witness proper boast by the acceleration? For example, timing it's speed from 0-30, 0-60? If I just had the proper acceleration for these speed intervals I think that's all I would need to diagnose the boost. If I don't acheive those speeds in the appropriate time, then I know a leak probably exists and it's time for a shop to check out the boast. Am I correct in this assumption?

Seriously, if you are reluctant to spend $60 on a boost gauge+pod, you should not own this car. You will absolutely need a water temp gauge and a boost/vacuum gauge is very important for periodic checks of your car.

BTW, MZM or Rotary Performance are both good shops and will treat you right. They will tell you to get boost and water temp gauges too. So will everyone else on the forum.

you dont have to have it but my guess is that the shop will hook up a temp boost guage. they can use a vacum pump to check the CRV and BOV. IMO going by speed and what gear your in wont give you accurate readings.

Its probably going to be $100 if you do it yourself or $200 if you let MZM install it. If you need help doing it yourself just ask

BTW what are your mods? if you floor it in 3rd whats your speed at 6500, 7000 and 7500 rpm?

First of all, I wouldn't spend $60 because if I was to get a boost guage I would get one that would be of high quality. Secondly, the only reason I say I don't think I should get one is because I thought that measuring boost could be done in an alternative way and by no means do I think I should not be worthy of owning a car because I want to explore alternative unorthodox methods.

Anyway, I will check my speeds at those RPM's tommarow.

bwahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha (Slap fore head!) newbie FD owners are soooo friggen funny!

My god, dude you should have really gotten a civic man. btw, dont forget to fill up on 89 octane gas (you gotta save every cent you possibly can)! woot woot You really are not be worthy of owning a car much less a FD (and another one will soon bite the dust!)

this post should go to a new section called "riceboy wanna be but just dont got enuf friggen money for a boost gauge "

IDK man, with FD's becomming so cheap that 12 year olds can buy them, I guess it was inevitable that there are a couple of guys just like this guy out there!

sheeet... if you dont have the $$$ then look for a friend who can let you borrow a boost gauge!!! i really think that it is necessary to have a boost gauge so that you can pin point your boost pattern...

What if you bring your to a worshop and you still didnt get the right boost... how will you diagnose that your car is running 10-8-10 ???

Wow, am I the only one on these forums with half a brain? This is so typical of forums - the immature insults, the misinterpretation of posts...

You ignorant slandering forum goers still don't understand what I'm trying to say. I was simply trying to explore another method of determining if I'm boosting correctly. Since when has free thought and exploration of ideas made somone less worthy? I didn't state "Boost guages are stupid, I'll never get one"; I was just trying to put out my idea on the table and see if it was possible to diagnose my boost in another way. I was looking for some input as to if it would work well or not.

I didn't ask for insults. All I wanted was some feedback on my idea - that's all it was guys - an "idea". For some reason any suggestion on forums that seems out of the ordinary or impractical to some people requires immediate attack. I thank psi4psi for the only helpful reply and the other posts are nothing but unproductive, immature name-calling. I actually think it's funny that I'm being called the 12 year old. I have yet to find a forum that makes me proud that I'm human. When did the world get so completely oblivious? Oh wait, it's always been like that...

Rx7isthebest,

I am a relative newbie myself, but everyone on this forum has been really helpful to me in trouble shooting my car.

I think what people are saying is that they need more concrete information to answer your question.

If your main question is can you acclerate in 3rd gear at WOT and see how your boost acts to diagnose your problem, I don't think so.

The best and cheapest thing would be to buy a gauge and hook it up to the nipple in the UIM (upper intake manifold). Then depending on your pattern, the people on the forum can at least tell you what the most likely problem is and how much it will cost to fix. It could be as simple as a clogged precat....

to me your question would be analogous to a patient coming in with chest pain and thinking he is having a heart attack but asking if I could tell he is having one without me doing an EKG...well maybe but probably not...we just need some more definitive data....

Ah so the boost pattern reveals more than I thought - not just if there is a problem but as to what the problem actually is. I didn't know that the guage could give that sort of indication. Thanks 7racer.

Bingo but there are other ways to tell if you had a heart attack (checking different amounts of anti-body count is a better, more sure fire way to check if you had one hehe)

there are too many variables that rely on other variables which cause secondary boost problems. How much boost you see after 4500 rpm would tell you alot and cut out some of the variables. For example if you saw 7psi after 4500 rpm that usually means either Missing pills for Wastgate and/or Turbo Pre-Control Actuators OR Wastegate and Turbo Pre-Control Solenoids are elctrcially unplugged.

It a big PITA to solve this the secondary issue and not having a guage only makes it worse. I know this because I just diagnosed mine recently. IMO take it to the pros in your area MZM or Protech and let them fix it.

here is a good site if you want to do it yourself http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-...leshooting.htm

RX7isthebest - I am not trying to be an a-hole but I agree with everyone else. If you are too cheap/poor to buy something as small and necessary as a boost guage, then I wish you wouldn't have bought the car in the first place. Where are you going to get the money to have someone fix the car when something really goes wrong? Obviously, your knowledge base for rotaries and cars in general cannot be very large if you don't know the importance of a boost guage, so I am guessing you will not be performing the work yourself.
If I were you and I wanted to continue posting on this site without being constantly ragged on, I would go to the dealer, buy the shop manual and read the important parts carefully. Then I would read everything on this site about building a reliable FD and get my hands dirty doing some of the essential mods. This car is a special machine and its ownership requires an intimate knowledge of how it works as well as a fat stack of cash to keep it running reliably. There is no sadder a sight than a car that is better than the person driving it. No offense though man.
