Be warned. It will attract a lot of negative attention. Ya know... The guys in the Red Jackets...

I was next to a buddy of mine in our FD's and he had an open wastegate. We pulled away from the toll booth and he cut it loose and it sounded like a steam pipe that was under 100 psi broke next to me.

I was like "Holy Hell"!
He told me what that was and I was like damn! It sounds broke and nasty. Get that fixed!

But hey, if its a spectacle you want. You are looking in the right direction.
Personally I wouldn't ever run one unless it was a drag car that never saw the street.

tial 44mm- dumped wastegate or "screamer pipe" as you call it

and its the least of my concern... idk why everyone says the WG's dumped it so loud.. among all the other noises our cars make i find it the quietest..

Some would say this thread is dead but I have to know how well does your car go and what hp are you getting out of the setup I'm building the exact same setup on my 7 just a 60mm tial gate and was looking at dumping the wastegate pipe out in front of the rear wheel I'm looking for around 500hp atw

I would love a vid

new to 3rdgens. I have heard the chuffing noise that the silver 7 made in the "loud modded rx7 with wastegates. What do you have to do to get that sound? Is it just wastegates or more to it than that?
just curious. like to get a third gen one day......love that sound.

That is called turbo flutter/compressor surge. And people typically want to avoid it...

A. The surge region, located on the left-hand side of the compressor map (known as the surge line), is an area of flow instability typically caused by compressor inducer stall. The turbo should be sized so that the engine does not operate in the surge range. When turbochargers operate in surge for long periods of time, bearing failures may occur. When referencing a compressor map, the surge line is the line bordering the islands on their far left side. Compressor surge is when the air pressure after the compressor is actually higher than what the compressor itself can physically maintain. This condition causes the airflow in the compressor wheel to back up, build pressure, and sometimes stall. In cases of extreme surge, the thrust bearings of the turbo can be destroyed, and will sometimes even lead to mechanical failure of the compressor wheel itself. Common conditions that result in compressor surge on turbocharger gasoline engines are:

-A compressor bypass valve is not integrated into the intake plumbing between the compressor outlet and throttle body
-The outlet plumbing for the bypass valve is too small or restrictive
-The turbo is too big for the application

Ok..... I think "screamer pipes" are pretty stupid but some people like them loud.

However, The Mechanical Engineer in me has to speak up here.

A dump tube or screamer pipe would help prevent boost creep.

I've seen dumber stuff though. I always love it when I see someone build their power train for drag racing then lower it (excuse me, "stance") to create a ferocious wheel hop problem.

Anyway.... I guess if you are desperate for a easy/cheap to reduce boost creep.

Stock port RX7, tial 44mm, dumped wastegate:

Same setup, recirculated wastegate:

Lol, cant even hear the rx7 over the GTO. definitely different from having the dumped wastegate.

So what do you make of this?

Not to threadjack, but not running a BOV is NOT as damaging as what has been indoctrinated. The video you linked, are cars in Australia, which there is an actual LAW that prevents from running a BOV on cars. And for as long as they've had turbo cars, very little of them actually experience any actual failure of a turbo by not running a BOV, vented or recirc. Is it laggy? Sure, maybe a few hundred RPM more lag between shifts. But not something that is going to prevent you from making power or winning a race.
