RX8 Starter motor

Does the RX8 starter motor spin the engine faster?? I remember reading something about it but cant find it. Is it true??

Seems the FD starter spins the engine roughly 250-280 rpm.

Not sure, but I noticed mine worked a lot better after I cleaned the contacts between the starter and the harness.

the original rx8 starter was a 210rpm starter. but b/c of the compression etc. it was flooding engines too easy. so they increased the rpm and battery cca to a 320-350 rpm and a 550cca battery.

kinda off topic but sorta related.. what if we were to put in a 1000 cca batt? Would that kill the starter motor?

If it did, I'd imagine that it would be a popular swap to help with starts, especially with those who are heavily modded. But what's the pitch of the teeth. May not mate up to our flywheels. Of course, an 8 compatable fly SHOULD be interchangable if they designed that part similarly.

Other way is, to use a 6 volt starter so it doubles in speed.

Buzzardsluck can you have a look at your RX8 starter and see if its similar!!!

If it doesn't bolt up, remember there is an adapter plate already between the bellhousing and FD starter. Making an adapter would probably be easy if it turns out the RX-8 starter holds some sort of advantage.

How'd it go? My autozone told me they don't carry the starter and that I would have to get it from a dealer. Dealer quoted 224~ish. PepBoys, however, can get them. I think 145 for theirs?

I hope your trip went better than my experience with autozone.

edit: Talkin' bout the Rx7 starter that is.

My father-in-law got his new beefier rx8 starter for free on account of the flooding issue...maybe he can sneak another in there for me

From what I remember on the RX-8 forum, Mazda upgraded to a "9v" starter to help with flooding cars. Since it's designed for 9v, running it at 12v spins it faster, giving a faster crank speed.

You most likely won't find starters for the '8 at parts stores - car is just too new.

BTW, seems like a common problem on the FD is just the starter solenoid. It's only a $40 or so part, and when it gets old you get the "click - click - start" routine.

The '8 starter could be an upgrade, but my starter starts my car just fine .

I'm still having problems with my click click no start problem. So I figure its my solenoid. I can order a new one for about $75 bucks. But I happen to have a starter from a 2nd gen rx7. Question is is it poossible for me to use the solenoid of the 2nd gen starter and use it on my 3 rd gen starter?
