My friend Matt has a 93 montigo blue RX-7 with the J-spec luxury version's rear seat conversion in it. It looks pretty cramped back there, so I dont know how comfortable it would be to sit back their for long periods of time. I'll give him a call this week and see if I can get a pic of his seats to show you. Just E-mail me later this week. - Kevin

In Japan, it is considered unsociable or decadent to own a two seater. They had the option of 2+2 3rd generation cars. You can have the rear seat removed from a wrecked one and imported to here. There is a guy in the army stationed over there that sold me mine. It came with the rear kick panels, seat bottom, seat back with trunk carpet attached (non bose), mounting hardware, seatbelts, etc. The only catch is that I think they only came in black leather. It took about 1 month to ship it over via the post office. I bought mine for my two girls, 3yrs old and 6 years old. They are about perfect for that size of person, that's about it.
I cannot remember what his name is, but he frequently advertises on ThePartsTrader.com. You can look there.
With shipping, expect to pay around $600-800 for the complete kit. I have seen people advertise for as high as $1000 also. It depends on availability.

Yes, the trunk still exists. The panel that separates the trunk from the storage bins is where the seat back is. If you get all of the kit, you can mount the side brackets that allow the seat to be folded down.
Jesse Lau was the person I bought my seats off of from Japan. He sent everything needed to install. His last known address is:

Email Him and ask how much and what is available. Make sure you put something in the subject line so he knows what you are looking for.

That is my 93 R1 in the above pics. Notice that the center console is missing in the pic, the stock one won't fit without modifications. I bought a spare center console and peeled the vinyl back and cut it to fit, looks almost like factory. There are also a couple of spots that the rear carpet doesn't cover, this is easily fixable with a couple of black pieces of material with velcro on them.
The trunk size does not change, the back of the rear seat fits where the cargo divider use to. Notice that the horizontal cargo cover still fits fine over the hatch area.
The seats ARE NOT roomy, I have a 20 month old daughter, haven't had her ride back there yet, but in a couple of years she'll fit perfect.

Rear Seat Supplier
The Japanese cars came with rear seats as standard. Most of the 3rd gens in the UK are japanese imports (mine included).
There is a guy in the UK that is an RX-7 breaker and he will gladly sell you a set of back seats: http://www.jimmys-rx7.co.uk As well as swapping the bins for seat, you need to change the side panels (the ones with the rear speakers in) and the rear carpet and also attach the seatbelts.
I am quite tall (about 6') and I have my driver's seat all the way back, which leaves about 1.5" of legroom behind me. It's easier if you have a shorter person in the front and a shorter person in the back. You can also get someone to sit sideways across the back seats. They would be ideal if you have young children.
Unfortunately I am unablet o find any decent photos.

I'm 6' 0" and drive with the drivers seat one click from the rearmost position (two clicks when I auto-x), that leaves about 1" from the back of my seat to the front of the rear seat. Not really any legroom if the driver is comfortable. I haven't had anyone sit behind me, but I've had someone sit behind the passenger. What do you do when everybody you work with has a 2 seater and 3 of you want to go to lunch?
I've "test fit" some kids, super small kids don't fit as well as kids that are say 6-7yrs old. The smaller kids legs are too short and there knees don't line up with the edge of the seat causing their feet to stick straight out.
