Dont get me wrong I had a stock AST that lasted a long while.
I stated why I'm not a fan of the aftermarket AST and as far as eliminating it the AST that's an option that most peopple with a slanted radiator aren't willing to go for (I wasn't). For me it's not a hassle to check the AST for age. Whenever I wash my car I pop the hood and check my oil, so might as well take a look at the AST. But that's just me.

Replace the AST (it's not that expensive!!. . .of course I'm biased because my original cost me an engine at 66k. Also, noting Montego issue with the AST, I had the same problem and Pettit replaced it immediately. No more issue in over 5 years.

My AST lasted only 43K miles. That's 43K miles of fairly conservative driving in a moderate climate (Chicago and San Diego).
