rx7 reliable car???

hey guys and girls new to this forum so any help will be very appreciated

at the moment i drive a 86 ford laser just to get me to work and back and ive alwaysed liked rx7's what i want to know is is a non turbo rx7 from 93-2002 a reliable car.

and is it worth the 20,000-35,000 dollars to own one by the time im 20.

does to rotary have lots of mechanical issues. a few people say if you have a car full the car wont go any where ... not sure that it is true or not.

what year models after 93 come in a non turbo.

thanks in advance.

From 93+ all the FD's are twin turbo... not sure what the laws are like in Sydney, but in Victoria, the police are all over you, its just not funny... I rarely drive my FD and i'm 18. I picked my FD up for 28k (AUD), if you take care of her, she will take care of you. I've spent

Sorry, don't know what happened there! Must of pressed enter! But i've spent alot of money replacing parts and customising parts, but after owning my FD for 2 years, i've never had a mechanical issue! Figners crossed... to own one at a young age, you have to be very lucky I know I am! But treat her well! As for the full car thing, even if you get a jap spec with back seats, you can't fit anyone in! But these cars can be a hand ful, all my money goes towards her.

Just keep checking your pistons as they have a tendency to rust in the cylinders--especially the supercharged, 4 door models.

if you treat it like crap... it will treat you like crap. make you sure you reed up to find out as much as you can about these cars. the reason people say theyre not reliable is because they dont tkae care of them... ive had mine for a couple of months and ive replaced a lot of little things like vacuum lines, coolant lines, etc.

is it hard to take the turbo out of an rx7 and then configur everything to a non turbo specc or will that screw up the engine?

if your buying a 93 and newer one, just leave it turbo and run the stock boost levels.. do the reliability mods and you should be golden if you drive it with a brain!

ok but the problem is in sydney the police are realy hardcore on p platers.. like i get breathe tested in the laser at the moment and if im in my mates ute its the same deal.

so i need to find a way to take out the turbo or is there a model before 93 that looks similar to the 95 or 93 model?

I have the same problem... I recently lost my licence due to driving a 'over power vehicle' but there is nothing that can be done... take the risk! Its worth it in my opinion... but don't touch the turbos... leave it as is and hope for the best...

you should buy an r32 gts or gts-t skyline instead until you are finished your graduated licensing thing. then get an fd with the money you saved on the insurance and gas and repairs.

no the fd is not reliable unless you get one with a recent manufacture date. once they hit about 10years old things start failing as expected on an old car, you will have to start replacing things.

Keep checking the blinker fluid. If that goes dry, the cams could lock up. Besides that, they are pretty reliable.

well im probably going to get a 180sx for now and then when i my full license i will go for the rx7 because it from what i have read its going to cost alot of money to keep it running and spending over 25k on the car plus 3k for insurance (under 25s) would take me a long time to get one.

but on the other hand my dad used to be a mechanic (still is family mechanic) and he would be able to get cheaper parts and then be able to put them in for me so i dont have to worry about the labour fee's

Not all FD owners are jacka$$e$...

And FD owners wonder why people say we are "pompous a$$e$"...

Mojo619,

Like stated earlier, all FDs are twin-turbo charged from the factory. You will find some that have been modified to a single-turbo setup, and yes, there is at least one person that has taken his turbos out to have a normally aspirated FD (couldn't find the thread).

As far as reliability, some have wisely stated that you can do the reliability mods, stay off of the accelerator, and hope for the best. It can be done, as I used to daily drive my FD for a few years, but it is now a weekend car for me.

Check out the FAQ link here. It is a "sticky" located at the top of this forum.
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/faq-3rd-gen-other-useful-links-68640/

Most of the questions you will have have already been addressed in some way, shape, or form. Use the "search" function at the top right of the page to look for things. That will save you the flaming that you will receive from all of these "holier than thou" FD owners...

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your searches.
