RX7 engine ??'s

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and had a few questions for you RX7 owners.Well first I came across an add for a 1993 RX7 for $6500 bucks with an auto trans, but the only thing is it needs an engine! My question is how much would it cost to swap in a stock RX7 TT rotary engine and still keep the auto trans? My other question is how good are the ATR exhaust sytems in terms of performance(did anybody notice any loss of power any where in the whole powerband),fit and finish, reliability, and most important sound(I want an exhaust with a really deep agressive sound)? If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
DJ

Welcome to the forum.

You can't do many power upgrades to an auto FD, the tranny won't like it. I guess you have to decide for yourself if an auto is right for you.

Does the car actually need a new engine (missing engine) or does the engine just need to be rebuilt? There is a world of difference between a rebuild and having to replace the entire motor and accessories.

Look at this thread for your exaust sound question.

As for a new engine, they will cost $2000-$3000 for the engine and another $1000-$1500 to have someone else install it.

$6500 is a decent price if there is nothing else wrong with it.

6500 sounds like a good price, but i have the feeling if you are really into driving your car, you will regret buying an automatic!

It will cost a hell of a lot more than that if the engine is missing, and not just blown. He will have to buy intake manifolds, turbos, and all the accessories.

Keep in mind if you decide not to stay auto when you get around to changing it to MT (the way it should be)you will have to consider:

(1) You will need a new differntial and driveshaft
(2) the ECU parts are slightly different (not sure how but the model # is A2 instead of A1 and there is another component there).
(3) There are harness differneces.
(4) There are a few other electrical issues to contend with.

At this popint the only reason I am not kicking myself for buying an automatic to transplant my old parts in it is because I got it for $6k WITH an engine and a clear title.

Thanks people for your replies!I didn't get a chance to call the dealer where the car is because I have to buy a phone card first(the car is in Cali,I live in Vegas),but on the add all it said was it needs an engine.as far as the auto tranny goes so there is no way to beef up the auto trans because people told me with my civic that all I would really need to do is get a torq converter and something else, but I can't remember, from leveltenperformance.com.So if there is no way I would do a manual trans swap, but I would perfer an auto trans!

Thanks,
DJ

ok, guys before you jump all over him remember he's new.

nyrx7, please, for your sake, don't compare an rx-7 to a civic, it'll get you reamed in here.

And no, there really is nothing to be done to save an automatic. The only thing that can really be done is to switch it to a manual, (not easy, as rynberg pointed out).
