Rx7 crashes?
Went for my first test drive in an FD and holy hannah it was a beautifull experience. I now know why all you rx7 heads love your cars so much. She was the fastest stock car I have ever driven. Didnt get to test her handling much but I still think I want to own one. But I cant find one at a decent price unless I want to buy one with 43K original miles on it, which Ive heard buying a high milage one nad replacing the engine is better to do.
But I was wondering how safe these cars are when in massive wrecks and whatnot, do drivers typically die, or come out perfect (which is the case with my current Subaru).

Most accidents i have heard about the driver came through alright..
The 94-95 is safer because it has a passanger side air bag also...
If you are worried about it thought, buy a roll cage

Safety
Im not concerned necessarily about it, I realize they wont build a deathtrap, just wondering how high it ranks, cause the subies were exceptionally high. But it wont stop me from buying it. I have now test drove one, I am hoooked

I think scoobys are safer.. I have a WRX and it is suppose to have a honeycomb stuff throughout the roof. That is why there are no sunroofs on the new age imprezas...

It's all about momentum
Wet the car weighs ~2800 lbs. That is not extremely light. Think the Honda insight weights 1600lbs. Civics weighs about the same as the FD, some of the older ones weigh less. Its all about momentum, that’s what kills in modern cars, the cars are all built to withstand impacts and not crush the occupants. p=mv. But if you are hit by something large 4000lbs+ at the same speed it is going to be bad in any car that weighs < 3000 lbs. I think of an FD as safer because I have abs, only weight 2800lbs, and double wishbones all the way around. I would rather be able to maneuver out of an accident then be along for the ride.

Makes sense
One last question about the test drive.
Do the rotaries sound anything like a piston engine does. The one I drove sounded a little more rattly, like somehting under there was rattling a bit, but he said it was normal for the rotaries.
Oh btw did I mention that I LOVE the cockpit of this car? If not I meant to.

I think they hold up pretty well, I rolled mine at about 70mph in the rain. I put a rollbar and 5pt harness in my new one though.

As far as safety goes, The FD gets 4 out of 5 stars (in the injury index). It's quite safe. If you search around the net for wrecked FD's, you can confirm this - almost ALL of the wrecked 3rd gens have fairly intact passenger compartments. If you want to know more, call your insurance company and ask them - they have lots and lots of data that help them figure out how much to charge for insurance - they may even be able to send you some info.
Just for information's sake: the 3rd gen is actually quite light in comparison to other cars (as we all know). It fits in the "compact passenger car" weight category which is 2500 - 3000 lbs. Its in the same category as the Neon, Civic, Kia Sephia, Ford Focus, etc. The Honda insight (1,856 lbs) is in special category called "mini passenger cars" (1500 - 2000lbs) - it's one of the only cars in that category these days, but in the past, this category contained cars like the Geo Metro, Chevy Spectrum, and Dodge Omni. how's that for auto trivia?

Thanks
Thanks BrianK I will defianately talk to my insurance, but that info is very helpful.
One last question about my test drive, I had it at redline in 3rd gear (which Im not sure how fast it was going) but the car felt a little shakey, might have been the road, since it was getting dark and I couldnt see how bumpy it was, but Im not sure if this is a common thing in these cars, I wouldnt imagine so since their speedo goes to 180.

Well the car felt borderline unstable, so I was going to see what the expeirences of ya'll are on the high speed subject. I do know what tight suspension feels like and this wasnt it.

Ahhh
Ok, well Ill make sure I go during the day so I can check out the condition of the raod and make sure that that doesnt happen. Would you happen to know what redline in 3rd gear would produce speedwise?

My car was shakey when I bought it. I got the rotors turned, replaced the tires, and got it aligned. Now I've had it to 140 and steady as it goes. I am getting the shake back now after 2 years. Need new rotors and get the calipers rebuilt. Should not rattle unless you have a loose exhaust heat shield, a bad clutch pilot bearing, etc.
