Hi all,

Just looking for a bit of information really, I currently own a JDM Honda Prelude VTEC but am hoping to become an RX-7 convert within the next 6 months.

Basically, i'm 21 years old and although I can afford the car and insurance i'm not too sure about the running costs - whats an average years servicing costs? does a lot go wrong on the rotary engines? I'm used to pretty good reliability with the Honda engine, how does the RX-7 compare?

Also, i've heard stories of complete engine rebuilds needed at anything from 40,000 to 80,000 miles, is there any truth in this?

I'm looking at getting an R1 if at all possible so any buying info specific to the R1 would be handy.

anything is possible...the rotary is a whole different animal. get a compression test and if you like the car, buy it money bags

 

It's a money pit...be prepared. If it not a problem somewhere...you'll want to upgrade.

 

reliable prelude vtec? umm... dont think there is a such thing as making a prelude reliable, because its a HONDA and they are already so damn reliable!

 

Thanks guys, but what about the engine rebuild question - whats a normal mileage before the need for a rebuild?

 

anywhere between: "Whatever the odometer says when you by it" and 125,000 miles.

 

make sure the previous owner didnt overheat it....or didnt tighten the rad cap

There is no "magical mileage number" for a rebuild. Depends on how well the car has been maintained/treated. Turbos are the same....
