RX7 1999 Idle Sound

Hey guys!

I bought an RX7 1999 Type RS. There is no info on last rebuild but compression tests were good (100 on hot engine test). But seller told me it is surely rebuilt (considering the fact that odo is already at 167kms too so yeah it wouldn't make sense if it was not.)

I feel like the idle sound of my RX7 is not normal compared to normal idle sounds i find in youtube and such.

Can anyone check if my RX7 might have been ported or something is wrong with it? (Vacuum leak or something) idle starts high at idle then goes stabilize at maybe 1.5k - 1.8k RPM. I feel like the gas consumption of it is really terrible too.

Video of my idle sound: https://youtu.be/uDufAHt9MKg?si=CPYGfwBD0mATBibV

Thank you and appreciate any help I can have. Cheers!

Vacuum leak would be the first thing I'd check - sounds like that plus the high idle...

Thank you for the suggestion. Hopefully I am able to try and find the problem myself with water technique. Will try and find that leak, fuel consumption is too high too.

Go to a shop if you are concerned, or learn how to actually work on cars. This is not a good way to diagnose things.

Learn to run codes. There is no check engine light. You can run codes off the diagnostic box.

Are you on original ecu? Or Power FC?

Original ecu will trigger "limp mode" if it it gets certain default codes.

Limp mode is designed to get you home and to the dealer for them to diagnose.

But otherwise makes the car run unhappy.

Most USDM mechanics will not have a code reader.

But if you are in NZ, locals should be well aware of what to do.

Hi TwinCharged,

Really want to fix the car myself and learn as much as I can. I post here to check diagnosis to get a rough idea so I would know what to do next as you guys are pros and probably have went through things like this. But I won't be taking the car to the shop, my mission is to learn as much as I can about my car from you guys and fix it myself

Hi Redbul,

I will run codes once my code reader arrives. My car still has the original ecu and has fortunately not activated limp mode yet so I know it is not that severe yet. But of course I don't want it to get there. I will start looking for vacuum leaks until my code reader has not arrived yet. Cheers!

Let us know where you bought your code reader. Others might want to buy one as well.

Hi Redbul,

I am grabbing a code reader of my mate in the UK. I just asked him where he got it and apparently a user named "bazjim" from fdoc.co.uk was selling a code reader that connects directly to the standard jdm port, but will only read off the oem ecu. Not sure if he is still selling them as I am getting my mates extra one. Cheers!

I bought one off YAJ/Buyee. Probably the same ultimate source.
