Rubbing on 18s

I got some Volks on my car and it's rubbing on the front passenger fender. And man my fender is getting messed up. What do I do? Roll fenders? Cut them? Any advice would be appreciated.

If measurements are needed I'll go look at them in the daylight.

I had a rubbing problem with my right fender, but I had stock wheels. I found out the strut boot on the strut was old and cracked which I was told that caused the shock to fully bottom out on big dips. I never hit the actual fender though. I just rubbed the plastic well in the fender.

I hope that helps. Sorry I couldn't give you more.

Jeremy

A tiny bit too tall. Its the size that all teh 'experts' (read tirerack, etc) recommend though. Its ripping the fender lip out when you enter an inclined driveway going too fast, right?

Whats happening is that when your wheels are turned, going into the drive - the suspension is compressed and the tire tread contacts the fender lip, pulling it out.

So it's the diameter that's causing the problem.

Stock 225/50/16 has a theoritcal overall diameter of 24.86", were as 235/40/18 as a theoritcal overall dia of 25.4".

Alternative sizes: 225/40/18 (border line, depending on factors), 235/35/18, or 245/35/18.

keep in mind that the actual dimensions depend on the tire manufacture (same rated sizes are not the same in real life) and the width of the rim the tire is mounted on.

I'm no wheel/tire expert, but I did buy and try three differnt aftermartket 18" width/offset and tire size combinations in the past year, so this is based on experience.

Fronts:

1st set: 18X8.5 +40 235/40/18 (25.4" dia)Kumho Ecsta Supras - fender lip ripped out only under above situation

2nd set: 18X9 +42 255/35/18 (25" dia) Kumho Ecsta Supras - no more problem

current set: 18X8.5 +44 225/40/18 (25.2 dia) Pirelli P Zeros - moderate rubbing in above situation.

The 225/40/18 P Zeros are temporay until the damn 245/35/18s P Zero Directionals come back into stock, or Bridgestone releases those sizes in S03s.

Hope that helps!

No problem - Rolling the fender lip out of the way is probably a good thing to do anyways, though some here have an aversion to modifying sheetmetal. If done correctly, no one would ever know, as that its a part of the fender thats not seen. See here for details:

Tool available from Tirerack.com for 'free' (loan a tool program), but get in line. I've been waiting three months. Speaking of which, i need to call then about that tomorrow...
