Rpms drop when I shift to 3rd at Wot, problem?

Every once n' a while I'll go ahead and give my gal some fun at WOT. I'm in 1st, rpms climb and speed climbs normally, shift to 2nd and its the same. Yet, when I put it in third the rpms drop somtimes below 2-2.5k rpm, but I'm still gaining speed. As I go to 4th and 5th gear it's normal rpm and speed climbing.

Sorry, I'm a newbie and I did use the search, that pretty much gave me everything that said "3rd gen" in the title. So what do ya think?

That is called the '3K hesistation' and is something that is normal for an FD. It usually occurs when the engine hasn't had enough time to warm-up. I've heard that adding an extra heavy duty ground wire from the engine to the battery helps to remedy this prob. But that's just for some peeps.

Hmm, well I do let the car warm up until it gets to or close to the normal temperature, then I drive lightly not going above 3k (I rarely go past 3.5k when I drive) for a couple of minutes.

Yeah, I've been reading a lot about that 3k hesisitation. It does make sense, before I bought the car I asked the previous owner if there was anything that needed to be fixed. He just had the car serviced, but said the battery might be the next to give way. The battery is looking a little worn.

I'll go ahead and add another ground. Do sites like Robin Ribonettes(sp?) site show you how to do it? And I'll go ahead and change the battery as well. In the meantime, I've had my FD for about a week and shes been runnin' beautifully. Should I do this ground mod asap? Thanks.

3k hesitation doesnt usually mean your R's drop to the low 2s. It sounds to me like you are not shifting into 3rd but 5th. At WOT there is an allignment problem that makes getting it into 3rd a delicate action, if you are just slamming it into the next gear chances are you are in 5th. How long have you owned your car?

Damnit! I typed everything up here and hit backspace and it erased it all. I'm such a dumbass...on a lighter note though, the gist of what I was saying was just that there is no rush to replace the cable since the battery is not prone to failing due to this hesitation. But if you must, just do it for reassurance by replacing the current cable. BTW good luck to us both! I'll be purchasing my 1st FD in a couple days if everything works out!

Futurexownr: he said about a week, but you might be right somewhat on that account. I went on a test drive today and tended to that sometimes on accident . But it could still be the hesitation.

i doubt it's the 3k hesitation if you're seeing it in 3rd gear only and at wot; the 3k hesitation usually happens when you're just cruising and the car is barely warmed up. the 3k hesitation is very distinct... you'd know it if u had it. does it feel like the clutch is slipping? my guess would be the clutch.

Darn we should be chatting on IM since we are posting so much lol. Anywho, regarding in addition to what future said, that could be the prob since the 3K Hesitation is just that, a hesitation. It honestly wouldn't drop you that many rpm's. I wasn't thinking straight. But hell might as well replae it. It's fun....plust anything regarding working on the motor will help you learn more about the engine. I say do it for the hell of it.

If it was the clutch slipping the Rpms would not drop they would increase, indicating a faster engine speed to driveline speed. I am almost positive he is just missing 3rd as a lot of people do before they get used to the odd transition at WOT. Why dont you take it for a ride and see if when you shift to 3rd you cant stay in it and hit 130+ mph? Then you know your in 5th.

Ok, I'm sleepy and about to go to sleep, so I just skimmed through most of your responses. But, as I read a response I remembered last night I diiiiiiiiiiiid notice I shifted into 5th .....by accident lol, thus making the rpms drop. Oops. But, I dont remember the previous times if I accidently shifted to 5th. So I'm still sketchy on that. But if so, then I'm real sorry I wasted bandwidth.

Like I said, I've only had the car for a week, and just yesterday I finally figured out how to turn on my fog lights and that leather seats are a pain, yet smell perrrtty.

I'll check back later on. Take it easy .
