RPM Signal Spark Plug Wire
Smog AGAIN
Well I went to get the FD smoged again, and I'm almost certain I would have passed. This is what happened:
For some strange reason, when he would clip the RPM signal tool onto the spark plug wire, it would not get a reading anywhere near what the engine was idling at. I mean I had the Power FC right there in his face with a digital readout and the wire wouldn't get close.
So he hooked up the little box they can sit on the motor that will detect RPMs. At idle it worked perfect, it was dead on with the Power FC. The idle test lasted about 10 seconds and went straight to the next screen for the 2000-2800 RPM test. This is where it went haywire, and the box was jumping from a 1900 RPM reading to a 5000 RPM reading. The engine was holding steady at 2400 RPMs on the Power FC, but he couldn't get the box sensor thing to work at all. So after 30 minutes of fiddling with it, we just aborted the test and I left.
But I'm certain I would pass this time, as I had the air pump hooked directly to the cat, no exhaust leaks, brand new cat, and leaned out the idle and RPM range on the power FC. The exhaust smelled great and like I said, the idle test only lasted 10 seconds and jumped right to the next screen meaning I'm pretty sure I passed that aspect.
I'm pissed, is there a special way to get the RPM clip to get a reading from the wires?? Anyone else had this happen before? I might try a different smog station and see if their machine will work, but man what a PITA.

I've had that problem once before with 4 different smog stations...couldn't figure it out. Then I remembered on dyno day last year, Kan grabbed the yellow wire off the HKS twinpower harness for the rpm reading...
For stock ignition harness I'm not sure which wire it is. Maybe someone else can chime in here.

RPM Signal Spark Plug Wire
Since I'm not getting any responces in my other thread I figured I'd start a new one. I need to know what to try so I can get this thing smogged and over with.
When hooking up the smog machine, the clip on the wire we used didn't get a valid RPM reading. It was all over the place. So they tried to use the box that you sit on the motor, and that didn't work.
here is the full story of my smog test:

Anyway, basically I need to know if there is a certain wire that they need to use to get an accurate / factual RPM reading. I would think any of the wires would work, but apparently not. The machine isn't broken either, they smogged a guy in front of me and another person as I was leaving and it was working properly.
Any help would be appreciated.
