check the map sensor, sometimes the vacuum hose pops off. its a small black box mounted on the driver side firewall next to the intake elbow.

what are your mods?

Check your clutch switch. It is located at the clutch pedal. When you depress the pedal, a white "button" should pop out at least 1/2 inch. If it does not come out, the switch spring is broken. You can replace the spring with one from a common ball point pen.

What does the clutch switch do? Isn't it just for the cruise control to know it should stop controlling? Does it serve some other function?

You'll need a boost/vacuum gauge like this one:

It's also used in conjunction with the starter and idle control.

i dont think its the clutch switch because there is no issue starting it and when i drive the car, which would require me to press the clutch, it still runs rough, but i will check anyway.

when you start the car with a stick, you need to press the clutch down so that the clutch swith engages. this is a safty precaution so that the car cannot be started in gear, which would not be good for the trans or motor or starter.

You should download a copy of the FSM. https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/94-fsms-available-download-449950/

The manual is pretty straight forward. If I were you, I would start in the section on Fuel and Emissions.

If you don't find your answer in there, then its time for a compression check.

You need to get a boost gauge....really a must for owning this car (along with a water temp gauge or linearization of the stock gauge).

Since this is your daily driver and you have no experience with the car, I would find a local FD mechanic or forum member to give you a hand. Plenty of gurus out there. If you want to work on it yourself, then yes, Section F of the FSM is where you start.

If I were you, I would try and get a hold of Rotary Experiment Seven. He is in Clifton. Maybe he can take a look at your car and give you an idea of what may be wrong. Otherwise there are a few other rotary places in NJ that can help you. I think JPR is in S. Jersey. Try the regional forums for other rotary shops near you.

Since the car is very new to you, you might not yet have the knowledge or experience to troubleshoot this yourself. If this is your DD, you either have to learn fast or find a pro.

If you don't have time to wait for a boost gauge in the mail, go to your local auto parts store and buy a cheap boost gauge and just hook up the vacuum line to the intake manifold so you can get a reading at idle. This will help us determine overall engine health. Without a boost gauge, you don't know how much boost you are running and that could cause you to blow the motor.

You may also need to get new spark plugs. Rotaries like fresh spark plugs.

Is it smoking?

Does it level out when you step on the gas or raise the rpms to 2k or so?

When and how did this develop?

How does the car run?

The more general info you can provide about the condition of the car etc.... the easier it will be for folks to help.

ok i talked to my cousin who its pretty good with cars and we were able to find the problem. there was a lot of oil in intercooler, which we understand should not be happening. the exhaust was dark and smelled of oil and after talking to a friend who knows a lot about turbo setups, we found that one or both (not sure yet) of the turbos has leaked oil and is now shot.

Now that i know this, my next question is what is the best way to fix this. Should i have it rebuilt, get an Enfini sequential twin turbo, a big single, or a non-seq twin. Im looking for something that will be good as a daily driver but will add a bit more power. also, i am not looking to dump a lot of money into the car at the moment since i just bought it last weekend.

Anyway, you guys have been a big help and hopefully i wont have to post to many more major issues on here.

99 spec twins are the best choice for you, you can get them from www.rx7.com. Rebuilds are a crap shoot, and to properly run the BNRs or single you're looking at 10k+ in mod money.

If your budget doesn't allow for a new set, you could also check out the for sale section and pick up a used set of twins. (you can find them from around $200 and up) Of course, thats a gamble all in its own.

I ended up doing this when mine gave out because I wasn't ready to buy all of the other crap I needed to go single. Which will hopefully be happening soon.
