rotory engine very reliable?

In my 2000 issue of "lemon-aid" it recommends the fd and says the rotory engine is very reliable if properly maintained, but all I every here in the forum is people complaining. Is the because people aren't taking proper care of the engines, mods, or should I just ignore what the book has to say?

Do a search for either realiability or reliable. There are TONS of previous threads regarding this exact same discussion.

Well, the rotary engine itself is a reliable unit, but in the 3rd gen RX-7's it's a different story. The car was built with a overly complex turbo control system, stupid exhaust (pre-cat), small intercooler, and a thermostat that is too high. Not to mention their mechanics weren't trained properly to start with and original owners that knew very little about them too. I've heard of many 1st and 2nd gen n/a cars go well over 150k on the original engine without a hitch, and even many Turbo II's as well, but it's rare to see a 3rd gen do that. It's a complex, high performance car that wasn't built to compete with Hondas and Toyotas in reliability. It was built for one thing and that is to perform. Now there are some cars that do go well over 100k, but I don't believe it to be the norm. You can certainly do all of the reliability mods people will tell you about and it certainly won't hurt the car at all, but it won't turn it into a 200k commuter box. Use and enjoy the car for what it's for and you'll be happy, but if you're expecting it to last forever on the original engine then you'll be sorely disappointed. Check out www.scuderiaciriani.com for a bunch of info and tips.
