well... i don't know about you... but smelling bad is not a problem considering that it leaks fuel ONTO YOUR ENGINE! This can actually cause engine fires and should be changed ASAP.

BTW... it costs friggin $130 USD!!!

Hmmm dunno how to help you there then, but the way to tell your fuel pulsation is going bad is when you REEK of gas fumes.

The FPD has a higher rate of low mileage failures with the FDs than the FCs. Should be replace when doing an engine rebuild if it has over 60k miles on it. If not, your car can go up in smoke.

Now what does the fuel pulsation dampner do? As its name
implies, it reduces pressure surges/pulses in the fuel system near the injectors. These pulses/surges are caused when the fuel pressure changes abruptly or when the secondary injectors open quickly. Like evertime you stomp on the gas.

it's located by the injectors UNDER the upper intake manifold. It might catch fire cuz...

1. it sits about 1 inch off the engine block
2. the rubber nipple it has deteriorates and will begin to LEAK fuel ON TOP of your engine.

Do any of you guys have pics of it? I am pretty sure that mine is leaking because my car smells like fuel 5 feet away from it and I would like to fix that before my car decides to catch fire. I am also getting shitty gas mileage.

it goes at the end of the fuel rail... looks like a dashpot witha 1mm rubber pug on the top. The whole thing is about the diameter of a quarter and maybe 1 inch tall with metal tube running under it. If I only had my digital camera i could take a pic for you.

If you smell fuel in you'r engine compartment it is most likely you'r dampner. Either way stop driving you'r car till you fix the problem. Or start carrying a six pack of hot dogs with you at all times so you can at least have a hot meal while you wait for the fireman to come and give you'r 7 a nice wash down.

You gotta remove a LOT of **** to get to it.

Here is a nice list of things you can do at the same time:
1) Replace all your vacum hoses
2) Send injectors out to be cleaned
3) Replace spark plug wires
4) Replace sparl plugs while you at it :p
5) Polish upper intake
6) Check for bad or cracked turbo coolant hoses

That is your pressure regulator not the pulsation damper. The damper is behind the primaries. You have three hoses by your oil filter (2 fuel hoses, 1 from the fuel tank, 1 going to the fuel tank, and the other hose sends gas fumes to the charcoal canister) The fuel hose closest to the front goes directly to the PD. When you replace the PD DO NOT forget to replace the o-ring, make sure the new one comes with one. One tip is to cut the fuel hose and put new Mazda HIGH PRESSURE FUEL HOSE, don't waste your time trying to pull them off because it won't happen.

here's an advantage of getting the Skyline fuel pump instead of the other fuel pumps. It has the pulsation dampner built onto the pump! much more logical, mazda engineers must've been drunk at the time to have it well hidden to start fires...
