roll bar

Hi,
what is the best roll bar for a 3rd gen RX7? I am looking for a four point and so far have seen primarily autopower bars. Do they fit well? and is bolt in a safe means of mounting? is weld in better?

thanks,

Andrew Wojteczko

Hey, nice install.

just a couple of questions, i'm about 6'1, would i still fit with the roll bar in, how much seat travel do you actually lose? Can you mount your harnesses directly to the roll bar? and finally how do you get the jack covers to go over the bar once it is installed?

thanks,

solo1seven,

I'm also 6'1" and ended up getting the Kirk bar that bolts where the bins are. With the bar that bolts to the floor behind the seats you will loose the last two clicks on the slider adjustment.

Andrew,
Well I'm only a paultry 5'8" so i'm not sure how
a 6'1" driver would manage. I would have to say that perhaps a smaller dia. steering wheel might be in order as you will loose some seat travel as Taz mentioned *unless* you get the optional main hood design that is placed in the rear bin area. but then agin you would have to eliminate the bins completely. Depends on what you want to do....pure race and you'd remove the interior anyways so it's a no brainer. However with the bar designed for retaining the bins the driver side loses one or two clicks but the passenger side does lose quite a bit. So date short women
I have my shoulder straps mounted directly to the bar. Lap belts and sub are to the floor using dedicted brackets but still using the OE mounting locations.
The "jack" covers actually have a slit in them. I cut them very carefully with a razor blade so that the cut lies directly beneath the bar. Unless you look under the bar it is completely invisible from outside the car and then you really have to look for it. The edging is acually door edge guard to finish the cuts around the bar where it pentrates the trim panels.
BTW thanks Puma.
Regards
Crispy
PS Taz did you answer my question re. your hood on the "roadracing" thread? Ta.

Crisypy Rx7 and Taz,

I'm very interested in the Kirk Racing 6-point cage.

Everyone raves about the M2, but I don't like the idea of mounting the bar on the strut brace mounts. With the right kind of impact, the strut towers "could" rip the M2 bar right out of position rendering the M2 bar useless in the collision.

The Kirk Racing looks like a BETTER design IMHO and made with thicker OD bars. The Kirk is mounted independently of the suspension towers and provides better support and stiffening for the FD in a really bad impact or rollover (particularly the Kirk Racing 6-point cage).

Crispy, I LOVE the red powdercoat bar...I'd like my 6-point cage done in that color!

Does Kirk Racing provide the roll cage padding. I don't want to get a concussion from the roll cage bars when I'm driving the car on bumpy roads!

What interior pieces will I need to remove for the front portion of the Kirk Racing roll cage to be installed?

I plan to install Willans Harnesses (6-point) and Race Tech seats (Extra Wide). What mounting points did you guys use to install the harness mount eye bolts (intended for the shoulder harness hooks)?

I see the there is a horizontal bar going between the two upright supports of the rear portion of the Kirk cage...is this the place to mount the shoulder harness eye bolts?

Do I need to get a separate seat harness bar?

Thanks in advance fellas!

Manny, the shock towers are very likely the strongest place to mount the rear support bars. Nothing else back there needs to be strong, so it probably isn't. That was my thinking on the mounting points.

Max,

Yeah, perhaps...I hope we never have to test each other's roll bar mounting point theories

I might just start out with the M2 stand alone harness bar, and Willans 6-point harnesses (which will already will be $808 plus shipping to Indy!).

In thinking about this more, the Kirk Racing Roll Cage will add 110 lbs to my car's unladen weight. Without stripping the car of all the interior pieces, or adding more horsepower--the Kirk Racing Roll Cage will add a significant weight penalty for piece of mind at the track!

I'm also thinking about how bad it would be to deal with getting in and out of an FD equipped with a full roll cage. I'm not exactly lithely built (240 lbs). Of course when I finally have another car to drive every day, that egress/ingress issues will be mute!

A while back, someone on the biglist was trying to import an R.E. Amemiya roll bar. Any Greddy dealer should be able to order it. I have only seen pictures, but it mounts the same as the M2 design, comes in either steel or chromoly, looks to be of excellent quality, and the kicker, it's FIA approved. The retail in japan has this bar in chromoly for under $1000, so I'm sure we could get it shipped here for around $1200. I know it's expensive, but if it's FIA approved it should be the safest roll bar made.
