RHD Steering Rack Question

Hey guys, long story short, I had my steering rack modified and it may or may not be able to be rebuilt, will find out in a few days. I’m just preparing for the worst, so does anyone have a RHD FD steering rack? Or is it possible to use a different steering rack from another RHD car? Obviously the mounting points would be different, but if I can’t locate a RHD steering rack I may have to consider that route. Thanks for any help!

there is no interchange

chips motorsports would be an alternative. he has the ability make the repairs that maval or phoenix rack and axel can not. he can also covert it to full manual which would be the best option anyway. if you are an adult man or female, the fd is easily handled without power steering and feels a lot better too.

interesting, I’ll have to check them out if all else fails! Thanks for the heads up. It’s currently at Maval, they’re only 40min away from me thankfully

Should be any number of them on yahoo, if you can't get any locally. Even saw an EPAS thing on there a few months back, if money is burning a hole in your pocket!

It's unlikely you'd get one without them, the switcheroo in tie rod thread between red and blue label racks in the earlier years is the main trap that springs to mind getting a used one.

If push comes to shove, I just found a few of them for sale in Japan in the neighborhood of $250-450 plus shipping. Part numbers for a Japanese Series 6 RHD rack are:
1T02-32-110x
F100-32-110x
F110-32-110x (RZ model)
Replace "x" with A, B, C or D for part superceeding (1st to 4th revision).

Awesome thanks guys! That helps. Hopefully everything will work out, but if not, I think I have a solid lead on where to find one. Appreciate it.

I think I was told that Mazda no longer makes new FD racks?
It's almost surprising no one offers a drop-in (electric?) steering rack with a slightly faster ratio.
I mean, basically every other part on the car has some sort of aftermarket equivalent...

yea from what I found anything new is out of the question lol unless NOS. They do however offer an electric power steering, and is supposed to bolt right in, but is not cheap. You send them your “core” steering column and they send you a previously modified core back. https://epowersteering.com/purchase/product/rx7-fd/

I may have misremembered. They may have said "a new one is 150,000 yen, so make sure not to break yours."

Haha.

Does anyone else not agree that the FD's steering ratio is a bit slow for such a pure sports car?

From watching old best motoring videos.... driving the fd the way it was intended to be driven, tsuchiya has me believing the steering ratio is appropriate 😅😅

You DM box is full. I found a RHD steering rack on YAJ.

I will post link here.

https://buyee.jp/item/yahoo/auction/...ce_page_search

Problem is if the unit (or the box it comes in) exceed 150 cm in length the shipping cost gets very high (EMS will not accept).

If it is under and the box otherwise fits under EMS limits, seamail is very cheap.

In the end you need to find a party in Japan to take the unit apart to ship in a smaller box.

RHD Japan may have a bidding service that imight (might!) custom dismantle things.

I do not know this as a fact.

Buyee will put no effort into trying to pack things smaller.

Jesse Streeter is another option, but he may not want to dismantle.

Having said all that if you are willing to pay DHL's $600, Jesse may be happy to bid for you and throw it in a large box.

Here is a partially disassembled one.

Buyee will not handle , likely due to potential fluid leakage.

Jesse Streeter is more likely to handle.

Seamail might be about $60.

Has anyone seen how the bottom part of the steering column section in the picture attaches to the motor?

I assume they've cut and shut the standard shaft and welded on the coupler. I would have expected an internal spline but the nyloc suggests maybe they've simply drilled a hole through the output shaft on the motor. The motor end above the controller appears to have a hole where a universal joint would normally attach, but detail is hard to make out.

Jesse Streeter will disassemble mechanical bits....for a fee.

i do notice other brand cars have faster steering ratios. i think Mazda uses a slower one, because its easier to drive. makes the car less touchy

in an all stock car? Tire technology has come a LONG way since then. Assuming skills are similar, it wouldn't be surprising that you would be faster than what was capable back then just based on tires alone.

I'm also talking about Tsukuba. Seems like 90% of the time this is the track of preference for all the testing and the 5 lap バトル wwww

It’s mostly tires. A lot of Best Motoring / HV was at Ebisu back then. Though at the time, there was only about a decade or so of difference in tires.

I may have gone faster at Tsukuba than one of the cast members in a comparable car. On a blown engine, I might add… I’ve only been there once and it was a long time ago.

Although one time a decade or so ago, I got to ride in my car as it was driven at a now-defunct track by one of the guys who frequented BM/HV videos (and a GT500 driver). He went a second or so faster in one lap with me in the car then I managed all day…
