Restrictor plates: hurt or help motor??

Hey fellas,

I'm currently using a Restrictor Plate to help my boost creep (from Jyro). I'm using the smallest one out of the three that he sells. I'm currently only getting 8-5-6 psi of boost but I've figured I'd stick with it since I want to make motor last and not run the risk of boosting too high due to creep or what not....

My question is that does this help or hurt my motor? I'm guessing less stress on the motor/ turbos = longevity... Would this statement be correct?

I could really care less about boosting high and all as long as I can make my motor last...

Thanks in advance!!!

why not invest in doing some good wastegate porting work for yourself. which will clear up any boost creep issues as well eliminate the need for restrictions?

Heres a link to a discussion ive started on the subject

I am going to put hundreds of dollars and hours in the car for more power ,then put in a restrictor in one of the systems . How smart is that ? Port the wastgate and go out and ride .

mabe its all he can afford for now. its a good way to stall till you get the money to port...i believe its around $250-$300 now.

do the port work yourself. its easy you cant really mess anything up too bad and best of all its free.

I bought the car this way, I didn't do anything to the motor to make it this way. I will eventually port the wastegate. I can go with a bigger restrictor and go with a 10-8-10.
BUT... my question was if this would hurt the motor or not, or I should say does limiting stock boost or lowering stock boost hurt it. Thanks again...

IMO, restricting the exhaust excessively is not a good way to go. This can cause excessive heat build-up in the exhaust areas of the engine and the exhaust system itself, as the engine struggles to push exhaust out of the overly-restrictive system. Excessive restriction also causes a drop in gas mileage.

I would say that you would be better off on both accounts using a slightly larger restrictor to bring your exhaust flow and boost back closer to stock levels.

Obviously, I agree that WG porting combined with no restrictor and an effective boost controller is the best way to go, giving you boost safety and better gas mileage w/o overstressing anything.

That is why I went with a high flow metal cat rather than a restrictor. Its still 3" in/out yet the flow is very similar to a straight pipe. Has just enough restriction to allow one to control boost while maintaining excellent flow characteristics and gets rid of that obnoxious stench from the exhaust.

You're welcome, and thanks!

I can't wait for winter to end so I can get my racecar out again. Of course, right now it's going through conversion from the "Pinto-based" engine to the Zetec engine. I'm hoping the conversion won't delay the start of my season too long.

Cool man!!! Yeah The Formula Continental I tested had the pinto motor in it - (96 Van Diemen chassis) and it was already pretty good. I can just imagine what the Zetec would feel like. Man I cant wait until racing season starts!!!
Thanks again and
Good luck!!!
