Replacing my engine with a '99 J-spec

Instead of keeping my other thread going I thought I'd start a new one. To see what went on already go here.........

My mechanic just called me (he started to take the old/bad engine out today) and told me that inside the intercooler there was a large mix of oil and coolant. We had just filled the oil (5 quarts) this morning and gave it one last test drive before taking the engine out. Now after the test drive and and the start of taking the engine apart, the oil was 2.5 quarts low. Most of it was in pipes/hoses and the intercooler. If I had doubts before about replacing my engine I dont anymore.

Surpisingly enough it wasn't spitting out a lot of smoke.. actually none!

Are you replacing your turbos too? I think the only way that much oil would get into your intercooler and turbo piping would be if you have a MAJOR seal leak in your turbos.

Paw, I just got a new Rebuild Twin Turbo from "KD Rotary", so the turbos are fine... Not sure if the engine is going to come with the J-spec turbos but if they dont Im confident with the ones from KD Rotary, he does good work.

Hate to break it to you, but there is NO difference between a '99 motor and a '93 motor. They changed the turbo's and that was all. If you wanted a "99" motor you could have just bought all new parts for Mazdacomp. I love it when you guys say "J-spec" like its top secret or something.....just messin w/ ya.....

Ernie T: There were changes btwn the 99 mtr and the 93-95's- mostly with the OMP and the sizing of the nozzles that provide the oil-I don't have the link to the SAE article explaing the exact internal changes but I'm sure some will post it up now that you mentioned it. I know the article is on someones website and has even been posted here.

As a whole, with the y-pipe, turbos, 16 bit processor and improved exhaust system the engine is much healthier-especially with the oil mods and the air intake setup

Is the '99 Spec engine much more expensive than a good rebuild...from say Pineapple ($1900)?

Also, the engine you are getting is used correct....not rebuilt?

i dont think its possible for the engine to blow oil into the IC...


check your turbos man. not to diss KD rotary, but its possible they couldve made a mistake when rebuilding your turbos.

and yes i agree with the above statement. its pretty much a waste of money buying a "jspec" engine. theres nothing great about it, and its cheaper to get a rebuild/reman .

the 93-95 part supercede to the 98-99 parts so if you rebuld your engine correctly you will end up with a 99 spec block.

pweizman, I paid 2 grand for mine. It was imported from Japan and rebuilt by Japan Direct (a place in Raleigh, NC) after 20k miles.

That is a really good deal if you are getting the long block...(turbos, water pump, etc...).

I was under the impression that the '99 and above J-spec motor was a 280 hp engine....

I believe 280 is only on certain models. While the lower models are still 265.
