Replacement MTICOTY windshield decals?
Replacement MTICOTY windshield decals?
For those folks who bought 1993 model RX7's, the original windshield also came with a Motor Trend Import Car of the Year decal in the lower passenger side corner. I still have mine, but it is getting very old and cracked, and after 123K miles I've picked up a star in the windshield that will eventually lead to it's death. I'd hate to lose the sticker. I email Motor Trend to see if they have replacements available. Has anyone made aftermarket replacements? It would be a good exercise in Photoshop and pretty simple to print the artwork to new clear decals. Unfortunately it is copywritten material and I'm sure there are legal implications. Motor Trend's website does give permission to use their stuff but only in a non-commercial manner.
Anyone? I have a graphics department that I might ping to see if they could mock something up.....

Mine didn't. Bought new in Aug '92. Perhaps it was after that that MT made the award, and Mazda started putting on the sticker?
Hey, Joe. That would make sense. Mine had a May 92 build date (~ 5000th unit brought into the US), so it would probably be the later part of the 93 model year. I assume you are referring to your first 3rd gen, and not the one you have now?
Yes, that .gif looks close, but the decal also had "1993 Mazda RX-7" encircling the circumfrence (sp?) of the compass on pedestal image, and was colored black and gold....

My sticker seems to be in reasonable shape. I tried taking some pictures, but found it very difficult to keep the camera at the right angle (I don't have a tripod), get decent contrast and focus, and not have reflections showing of everything but the sticker.
If someone wants to give some hints on how to take a better shot, I'm willing to try.
As my windshield is nearing replacement - I would be interested in whatever solution you come up with.

Any decent sticker shop can make you those for a few pennies each.
Man, I love this group - when it comes to our cars, you deliver results fast. Motor Trend still has not replied back to me, so.....I'm going to borrow the above .gif and give it to my Graphics folks to create some stickers. I may provide them as a 'free service' which should be ok based on the info from Motor Trend's website, which says they don't mind using their stuff online as long as you don't use it in a commercial venture. I just want to preserve the authenticiy of the windshield....which is pretty funny coming from a guy who's completely modifed his car with a Cosmo motor and single turbo
. I may just ask for folks to send me SASE and be done with it.
The top .gif with the darker gold flake color is a very good replica of the gold color. I'll go measure the dimensions once it stops raining - I think the size is roughly that of a half-dollar or Susan B Anthony dollar......

I had one when I got my 93 about 6 months ago but the sticker was in such bad shape I had to remove it.
Anyways, the copy in robperri window is a larger than the original but not by too much.

I'm guessing it looked a little like this.
