removing engine withot transmission

Is it possible to remove the engine of my FD without removing the transmission?

Im just rebuilding the engine, im wondering if it would be best to remove the tranny first then the engine, both at the same time or somehow leave the tranny in.

whats going to be best for a first timer? Can i leave the transmission in place?

You could do it either way, but the hardest thing IMO is separating the transmission from the engine while on the car, so what I always do is take both of them out at the same time. Obviously doing that is you have a couple of extras things to do like remove the shifter, remove the PPF from the tranny, remove the driveshaft and plug the hole in the tranny so the fluid doesn't leak out. The key in doing this is how you place the chain or whatever you use to take the engine out. Just take your time doing this and know that it could be done because I did two engine swaps this week this way. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask

I always remove the engine without the trans .Even if the trans is to come out as well .It is easy for me to not tear things up by removing the smaller units .

i'd always detach the tranny... right, before i say anymore add this post to your favourites if you are going to pull the engine without the transmission.

!! remember to release the clutch from the upper clutch rod service cover before prying it out !!

put a jack stand under the tranny, when u lift up the engiine lifting it out of the motor mount places. That way you can seperate them while the engine is suspended in air by the hoist. And u need something to hold up the tranny once the engine is gone anyways

I've always removed trans first and then engine. I always did it on a lift and it's very easy, at least to me anyway.

I remove the engine with the tranny still in the car.

Need to raise the engine/transmission assembly until the tranny is all the way up against the tunnel. Then support the tranny from below and separate the engine. The engine mounts sit deep in their own wells and have to clear for the engine to move out. You can either remove the engine mounts before separating the engine/tranny or do as I do; release the six bolts/nuts on the subframe assembly and lower it as much as it will go. That is about 2 inches, just enough for the mounts to clear. Stick a couple of 2x4s between the subframe and chassis to keep the gap as the suspension tries to hold up the subframe.

Good luck.

both ways work, its just if you need to do work on the tranny or not. If you need to change a seal on the tranny take it out with the motor it will come out with the motor pretty easy. Other wise its easy just as easy to take the motor out along.

Just remember the right tool for the right job a swivel 14mm is a nessesity for the bell housing bolts
