Question Reman engine or rebuild engine????

hey everyone, yes I did my seach, but I need to clear some information up and confirm what I understood. well here is my problem. I need an engine, because my o-ring is gone and my vac at idle is low. I am wondering, if i should send off my engine for rebuild or get a reman and send in my old one as core.
From what I been reading, the following are the pros and cons of getting rebuild.
pros:I can ask for upgrade if i wanted to, i.e 3mm apex seal, silicone o-ring, or porting the block.
Pros: Customer service and tech support. The rebuilder can teach me alot of stuff about my engine.
Cons:The cost is unknown until they open up the motor.
Cons: It takes forever to get the engine back( two weeks to two months)
Cons: It does not come with anything new i.e water pump, oil pan, etc., you get back just your block and your reused all your old parts.
on the other hand, if i get a reman, the follwing are the pros and cons.
Pro:It comes with new water pump, new oil pan, new oil metering pump, just all the misc. stuff on the engine is new.
Pro: You get the reman first and do the engine swap then send off your old engine(of course, after you keep a few of the old parts for spare ).
Pro: The price is set at what a reman cost (2200-2500 plus shipping) and not depending on the condition of your engine.
Cons: Noooooooo upgrades .
Cons: Noooooooo Customer service or Tech support. I am on my own. (Of course I will have this club)

Please confirm my understanding of this process. Your comments are wanted. (good or bad) flame me if you want. Thank you in advance.

oh sorry for the long post, but this big for me. I just need to make sure I understand what is going on.

thanks again.

U pretty much have it down to a T. I did a rebuild just cause' I wanted the better seals the street port and I was planning on pushing a little more power. If anything u can always get the reman and use that for now and in the mean time build ur old motor the way u want it...then when the reman goes just take of all the newer parts and put them on the built one.....

that is a good idea, but don't I have to send in the core. How much is the core charge for getting a reman?

Up here in the NW, the Lee Johnson Mazda dealership is charging $1000 for a core charge. Ever thought of considering a JDM longblock engine? Just a thought. I have given this topic alot of thought in terms of my own decision to go with a rebuild or reman and have decided to go with a JDM engine swap as it would be the fastest and easiest solutions in consideration with my current resources.

Mind you there are a few caveats with with going with a JDM engine swap. Like, availibility, bad engines, emissions, and a different wiring harness just to name a few. I personally felt the pros outweighed the cons for my application.

I've heard Ray Crowe from Malloy Mazda has decent prices for remans. Does anyone know Ray's quoting for remans and core charges lately? I've been meaning to give him a call just out of curiosity.

Please keep in mind that a JDM engine is just a used junkyard engine from Japan. We tell all our customers that they can make good cores "sometimes". We have taken apart j-specs where everything is usable, then on the other hand we have seen them with virtually no useable parts.

Most Mazda dealers charge a $1000 core charge.

I'm very happy with the reman I got from Ray in May 05. $2400 + my old core(1000). Good price. If you want a custom engine then rebuild is the only option. If you just want a stock engine rebuilt, by the time you ship it, pay to have it rebuilt and shipped back you'll have paid more than 2400 and had to wait in line for however many rebuilds are in line before yours. I only live 50 miles from Malloy so for me the choice was clear. I threw the old one in the suv, drove over there and got the reman, and dropped it in the car the next weekend. I've got 800 miles on it and it runs great. He also told me at the time he had NEW engines which were $4000 with a $600 core charge.

short block is just the engine itself---no peripherals or accessories. basically the iron housings, rotor housings, rotors, eshaft, etc all buttoned up.

long block includes all the other misc crap, fuel system, accessories, etc.

Bought my engine from Ray a few years ago and after 35,000 miles it's still making 240 hp to the wheels with absolutely no mods but downpipe and catback. It's been great.

Short block is typically just the engine, a stock flywheel, waterpump/housing and stock main pulley (when dealing with a reman that is).

just one more question. Does porting a reman engine void the warranty on the engine?

Since the engine has to come apart for the porting, yes.
