relocating the battery (question)
I am looking at getting an m2 large smic in the next month so I need to relocate my battery. I looked at m2's site and they sell a kit for relocating the battery for $300. That seems a little steep considering what they give you and what you can just buy yourself. Heres the list:
battery
metal mounting case
2x 2guage battery cables
cable ends
terminal covers
Thats not too much stuff so I was wondering if you all bought the kit or if you just got the materials and made it work?
Thanks

I ordered the relocation kit from Pettit but got tired of waiting for their batteries to come in stock. 'They sent me the cables and a bracket which I didn't use anyways.
I went out and bought a $60 13lbs battery that easily fits in the compartment behind the passengers seat and the mechanic working on my car used Pettit's cables to run it quite nicely underneath the car, and well shielded.
The setup appears to work fine. Its not a powerful battery but it starts the car just fine and I live in Florida so I'm not too worried about cold starts. It's like a motorcycle batter. 20 lbs less than stock and fits completley inside my compartment (with the lid closed too).
While we used the cable from the 'kit' you could do this yourself for parts under $100.

Thanks

Any concern about a blowup? Do the kits offer any casing/shielding? I have had two batteries blowup on me b4, upon startup. Also, what did you do with the fuse/connection currently at the POS on the battery? Did you just tie in there and run to the new location?
I hate having the battery in the stock location!

Migth want to consider using a dry cell battery if it's going to be inside your car. They give off less vapors and less chance of leaking. You definitley want to secure it some how, if you wreck you don't want a battery fling at your head.

From what I understand, some fmic kits will allow you to use a smaller battery in the stock location. I have seen several people use the hawker odyssey battery. Check out my other thread: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...threadid=93445

Get your cable at a welding supply store, it's cheaper and better then Home Depot or any of the other electronics and hardware stores I have checked. Racing sanctioning bodies will not let you race with a battery that is not in a vented battery box, regardless of whether it is a gell type drycell or not. I plan on putting my Optima Red Top (it's not light but it has a lot of CCA!) behind the passenger seat in a box, venting it and wiring it all with 0/2 welding cable and directly wiring the walbro pump so it can get full current.

All I plan on doing is removing the bottom of the storage bin, and making my own rack out of fiberglass and plexiglass. Then I'm just going to use 4 gauge, and my own terminal ends. I should be able to get it done for about $100. I already have the battery, so I just need to get off my *** and do it.

I was concerned about venting as well. I wonder if a simple hose vent from the battery "compartment" to the outside....say rear fender well...would do the trick. Also, the POS cable...what type of insulation should it have. If you are running it under the car and something smashes it thereby grounding it out, you got problems!

You don't need to provide venting for the Odyssey, it is totally sealed. Go to this link to learn more about the Odyssey:

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. What type of venting can I do, what have you all done or plan on doing?
Thanks again.

If you drag race with a relocated battery you have to have a kill switch located on the car that will cut the current from the battery. I am relocating mine soon because it is just too crampt in my engine bay with the Blitz FMIC. I bought a small Honda Civic Battery and it works fine but is a little too close to my pulleys for my liking and it is also really close to the fans.
