Relay clattering behind dash

Hey guys,

a problem on my fd occured like overnight, i hadn't changed anything so i don't know what it caused but hopefully you could help me:

When i turn the ignition on (not starting), there is a relay clattering behind the dash, that sounds much like the indicator relay (which it is not), just at a lower frequency. It also keeps clattering when i start the engine, i had checked indicators (then you hear both relays clattering), wipers, warning lights, any key in the car.

When i remove the key, i recognized that the small red light nex to the ignition lock is flashing (or at least flickering, but no steady light as it should be) - similar for the door lock light, no steady light, it goes on and off....

Kind of confusing is, the battery shouldn't be the problem, i had checked the voltage, seems fine.

Any ideas what it is...?

It could be the factory immobilizer. I had the same issue recently, turned out to be the immobilizer, a little black box under the dash.

...well, i will check that. Do i have to take the whole cluster out to get access to it and how can i identify it? or does it sit behind the ignition key lock?

+1 for the factory immobilizer. I also had the same issue. Shortly thereafter the car wouldn't start on occasion. Look for the "click-click-no start" thread, it has all the info you need. It's easy to get to and you don't have to remove anything to bypass it.

...should be a great help, but i couldn't find the thread. I searched for "click-click no start" and it just showed 2 threads including mine, do you have a link for me?

Or if it was deleted, what have you done? Just change the relay?

thanks

...as it turns out, it has nothing to do with the immobilizer...

The Problem is a small box, with 2 connectors, where also the beeper seems located in.

It seems the problem is temperature sensitive or a loose conctact.

Can anyone tell me what that box is and how it is called, i will check if a new one can solve the problem...

Where is this box located? Under the dash or in the driver's side footwell panel? Take a pic.

Its the CPU No.2, exactly under the drivers side footwell, i guess its a common problem.

Just have to check if there are differences between LHD and RHD and if later spec FD boxes will also fit (perhaps they have different connectors).

Yes, CPU #2 has the "beeping" sound coming from it. It has FD01 written on it. Here is a pic of the part:

I note you are in Germany. Here in North America, the part is no longer available. I know this because I bought the last one and it came from Canada.

The capacitors are known to go bad and are not that difficult to repair. There are a few threads on the forum on how to remove and replace them.

Or, contact Fritz Flynn. He probably has an extra CPU unit for sale. Good luck.

It's still available new from Japan for around 140USD plus shipping... should be applicable in RHD and LHD cars

^ What sites do you recommend to purchase new from Japan? There are a number of other FD parts that are no longer available here and I'd like to see if I can get them new.

Thanks!
