Question reinstalling tranny?

Alright, I was changing my clutch over the weekend, and simply cannot get the tranny to line up right with the motor so I can bolt it up. I need the input shaft to slide in about 1/2" more into the e-shaft but it just won't go. With my friend helping me, we have taken it on and off over 10 times. We made sure the clutch was aligned using the alignment tool. The pressure plate is properly torqued, input shaft is greased, ect. We are using a floor jack with a block of wood to raise the tranny. I tried to rent a transmision jack but useless Autozone never has anything. Is there any trick to doing this? I am lost here.

hmm...

i really have no idea since I have only pulled the tranny along with the engine, but maybe try jacking up the engine a little in the front so that it angles back (rear of engine down - front of engine up). maybe that would give you a better angle to slide things in??

its been so long since i've had things together i cant remember how it all fits together....

too bad someone cant tell ya....im sure someone can tell you a good source for blitz bovs, sparco stickers, and hyperwhites though....yea....

shake wiggle and push ,see if the gap between the trans and motor is even all the way around . the small trans shaft end is not going into the pilot bearing ,wiggle and push .If any bolts will start use them for alinement.

I had the same problem. Apparently the alignment tool wasn't worth a ****. I would make sure the clutch is really properly aligned.

Some of the alignment tools do allow quite a bit of play. Eyeball the pilot brg. Make sure it looks as if it is in the center of the clutch disc spline.
I had to raise the front of the engine to get trans to go in.
As stated earlier make sure you have equal distance-trans to bell housing gap.
I wouldn't use a bolt to try to "force" it in.
If everything aligned, wiggle up and down and she'll go.

If you still have the strut tower brace on, wrap a towel around it. Use a pry bar and have a helper wedge a pry bar b/w the brace and a solid part of the engine. Rotate it CCW as viewed from passenger side wheel. Tranny should snap right in. You really gotta rotate that sucker to get it in.

Make sure you put a little grease on the trans input shaft and the pilot bearing.. that'll help a bit. Also, it's always easier to get it in there if the tranny's in gear when you're trying to mate them up.

It might also help to loosen up the clutch again, put in the alignment tool, wiggle it around and see how much slop you've got. And shoot to leave it in the center of things.

Good luck.

use bolts, in most cases you will not be able to get it in there by hand, I went and bought longer bolts, tightened a little on each side until it was snug...

Got it back together. First of all I replaced the pilot bearing seal. Don't know if this helped or not, but I had an extra seal so I figured I might as well. then I realigned the clutch disk. The stupid alignment tool had alot of play in is so my friend had to look and make sure the clutch disk was centered while I tightend down the pressure plate. Next we jacked the trans up using a floor jack and some wood boards stacked together. As we jacked the trans up we kept moving the jack back to get the rear of the trans higher. We got the bellhousing to within 1/2" of the motor. We then used some longer bolts, carefully tightening it evenly around until the trans and motor pulled together. Once it was close enough I reinstalled the stock bolts. Now I just finish up the small stuff and then go for a drive.
