Yeah I fit fine in the stock seats....

However, I want a racing bucket for more clearance =) Will need it so I don't hit my damn head on the rollbar.

^ just think weight reduction if you dropped like 20 pounds you could put the spare tire back in and still be at the same weight as before or keep it out and feel like you gain rwhp not the hp kind when you get a ebay bolt on . I on the other hand i eat like a fatty but still just shy of 140 and standing 5'11 but my height is in my legs and i have the seat all the way back in my r1 and my knees skim the steering wheel i might have to find some kinda tilt steering wheel out of a touring or something.

Are you talking about racing seat for use in racing, or some kind of racing "style" seat for use on the street?

Friend of mine has a race FD and they are using a Kirkey aluminum racing seat fit to the car.

I am not fat... geezus people.

I just titled it for the topic....

Maybe next time I'll title it, "Best seat for big man with buns of steel who goes to the gym 3-5 times a week and deadlifts 500+ for sets"

I just need a wide seat since I have a wide frame... broad shoulders/back, etc.

So comments aside, recommendations would be best....

I eventually bought a Kirkey intermediate road race seat, and mounted it on the stock rails. It was about $300 bucks and drops your head down about 1.5 inches (enough for that helmet). You will need to bend the left wing in a bit to clear the door (the entire seat is aluminum so this is relatively easy), but sitting in the seat you won't even notice.

DHAHLEN I'm with you. These guys need to get to the gym. I'm 5'10" 235 lbs.

I've got Torinos in my BMW. They're a little tight in the upper back shoulder and in the legs. I really lilke them though.

Hey, GOOD CALL above, I forgot about Kirkey seats. You can get a much larger seat that will still fit in the car due to the design.

I remember driving a car that had one. the owner was a bigger guy (former college football player)... and he litterally just bolted the thing right on the factory rail without too much trouble IIRC

Check one out.

Says in their installation manual they do not "recommend" the use of stock sliders since they can come loose in a high impact crash.

They offer a mounting kit but it requires a cage.

Kirkey's look like crap, they will fit though and are well made.

Here is a hint... don't sit in one on a concrete floor and have a group of smartass friends in the same room. It won't take long for one to figure out if they flip you back, you can't get up . Don't ask me how I know this...

You're using the stock sliders?

Do you just drill the stock sliders into the seat? Since this is "not recommended" any information, pics, etc, would be great. These seats seem pretty decent... they don't look all that comfortable.. but the deluxe road race looks like it may work.

They are actually QUITE comfortable, if questionable asthetically. The person I refered to earlier was no less than Gene Felber, who put together a pretty solid car. I may have a picture of the mounting someplace, I'll look.

FWIW, even on the slider, he did use a seat back brace w/ the M2 rollbar, so I dout he did much sliding of the slider.

Hey Darren,
I happen to have this seat that Pete is referring to

I'll post up a pic later tonight.

I would look into the kirkey seats as well, they come in various sizes, are easy to bolt in, and you can bend the shoulder wings in a bit if you need to. The ones I sat in were very comfortable compared to other racing seats. The only downside is that they are pretty ugly...

IIRC, it is suggested that you use a seat back brace with any aluminum seat.

Never installed the Kirkey, just couldn't get over the looks. Up until last weekend I used a Clubman. Most uncomfortable seat ever made, but I fit in it and it fit the car. Now it is on the passager side... lets see how many people ask for a second ride along .

I have the Clubman mounted on the stock slider, I did make 1/4" steel plates to bolt to the stock rails and the seat. Bottom mount holes were not in the same place.

Most of the racing seats are made for men who are built like women. Or 'average' size. I am looking for a seat which can comfortable accommodate someone who is larger than the average joe.

Back/shoulders are a bit broad so most seats are going to be somewhat of a problem, but I need something that is not so "enclosed"

If anyone has any recommendations please pass them this way so I can pickup a set of seats!

Thanks!
Darren

Do you need a full racing seat? i.e. fixed back with provisions for anti-sub strap(s)?

I'll primarily be driving the car for enjoyment, it's not a daily.

However, granted I need to go on a long trip I'd like it to be comfortable. I suppose I can swap my stock seat back in if needed no problem.

I plan on doing road race courses - probably not competing but you never know. I may get addicted. I need something safe, that can harness me in and provide decent support so I do not go sliding all over the place. You know how the stock seats are, esp leather... make a nice hard turn and you go sliding right into the damn door.

Leg support will help since they prevent that.... seat has to sit a bit lower for helmet clearance.

I don't know a ton about the whole racing seat deal... so the input is greatly appreciated. I just want something with nice support and enough clearance to be comfortable, yet functional.

Seats need at least a 20" hip area ugh.

Most seats go to 18", some 19" - the larger seats up to 21" which I'd probably want.

Unfortunately my selection is very limited for 20"

This is the hip area, not the full width including leg supports. The overall width of the base would have to be somewhere around 23"+ I would imagine

I don't believe you'll fit anything over a 20" base in the FD. The Sparco Torino is a little over 19" and it barely fits (IIRC, you have to pull the adjustment ***** off the sides so the door will close). This is why most of the seats you see people here using are in the 18-19" range.

IMO, you really only have a few choices:

1. Go for a Kirkey seat. Most of the larger racers I have seen typically have those. However, I don't know about those being all that comfortable to tool around the public streets in.

2. Go for a seat like the Corbear A4. You can have it made with less foam to give you a little more head room. This would be the best comfort type seat. It has the racer look, but it doesn't have the huge bolsters which can get in the way for larger drivers. However, it isn't a "race" seat so it won't have a way to "properly" mount anti-sub straps. It can work though. I have mounted the anti-sub strap and used a 5pt harness with the stock seats. It's not ideal, but it can work.
