rebulding turbos yourself

Has anyone done this? If so how hard is it? I was thinking of attempting this winter. My turbos still make boost they are just burning a lot of oil, and they have a fair amount of shaft play. Is it just a bearing and and seal I think.

The reason I am thinking of doing it myself is becasue eventually I want to get a set of high flows, but don't have the cash at the moment.

Any thoughts on this would be appriciated.

What I'd like to know is where to get "dynamic" seals to run more boost and how to get less rotational fiction to decrease spoolage time...

I did rebuit mine last spring using the turbo city kits. I have around 10000miles on mine (countless WOT runs) and they are still holding up well. I was very impressed on the amount of play that they took out of the turbos. they are/were very smooth with next to no play. I did it myself and it was surprisingly easy. If you do it, here are a couple of tips:
1. mark the housing alignment, if you don't, or you mark it weakly so it rubs off, you will spend a couple of hours getting it right again (like me)
2. you need some heavy duty "C" ring pliers, they are huge snap rings and you will probably need a buddy to help you with them.
3. you also need a really small set of snap ring pliers; tips are ~0.040"
4. make sure every thing is clean, especially in the oil passages
5. if you choose not to have them rebalanced, mark the turbine to compressor orientation as exact as possible (probably wouldn't be a bad idea regardless of having them rebalanced.)
I didn't have mine balanced due to time constraints, probably should have but both the wheels were in good shape and shouldn't have been out of balance. a local diesel shop quoted me around $90 to have everything balanced, so it's not too bad.
6. the torque specs on the rebuild kits are very light, in fact i had a compressor nut come loose after a few thousand miles. So tighten those babies up snugly and use tread locker.
7. make sure that you have the turbine shaft and compressor are seated all the way in the housing before you put them back together. my primary wasn't seated properly, luckily i noticed before any damage was done. just make a note on the amount of shaft hanging out past the end of the compressor wheel.
8. seat the "C" clip into the compressor housing with a punch (it should make more sense when you have them in front of you). they don't like to seat all the way in by themselves.
good luck

Let's talk about clipping now...
What exactly is it? Anyone got a pic of clipped wheels? Or a procedure on how to do it?

No idea's on decreasing rotational friction?

I'm interested in what the story behind clipped wheels is too...I will probably google it sometime, but if anyone on here knows what's up, share the wealth!

Little more info on doing this yourself with clipping and better seals and less rotational friction!

Anyone.

Don't try to clip them yourselves. Take them to a turbo shop and have it done. You can't just add dynamic seals. It takes some machining to accept them.
