rebuild, is it safe to drive on a 5 hr trip?
Just got car back. Has 100 miles since rebuild on it. Wondering if it is ill advised or not to drive her up to northern cali and back this weekend. Of course wouldnt boost and would keep under 3200 or so RPM but wondering if running the car for that long this soon after rebuild is OK for it or not? If it is OK that would be great so I can get her broken in quicker. about 600 miles round trip.

I drove my freshly rebuilt motor from KDR in PA all the way up to central Mass. It ran and drove fine and has been going strong for 6k miles. Varying the RPMs for the trip is a good idea, and stay out of the boost!

I was directed by Skip at KDR (Skip now of anti-detonation device fame mind you) on my break-in procedure, and I've posted it here a few times, search for it.
if they replace the bearings, you need a longer break in period, other-wise there isnt much to the motor. I am sure you want to give it a few miles to let everything re-seat itself. Just what I have heard.
Not that anyone really cares, or will follow me on this... But:
How much breaking in do these things really need? I mean, a few full warm-ups and maybe a hundred miles of driving should do the same thing as 1000 miles of driving and a bunch of babying, no?
I watched Peter Ferrell drop fresh motors in cars and head straight to the track.. ? Whether you like him or not is irrelevant.

you can run 6psi on a 10.5:1 compression piston motor...as in, it doesn't stress it that much
i'd say leave your wastegate wide open and you'll be fine

When I picked mine up it had 500 miles on the rebuild. I drove it from SoCal to Washington (1200mi). It ran great, although I only stopped for gas and never shut the car down. I varied the RPMs as best as I could, but the stayed between 2000 and 4000 the whole time. There were long periods at 3000. The motor starts and runs great, pout 5000 miles on since then. Will get a compression check done soon to see the internal health of the motor.
im about to get my car back from my friends shop after gettin a new core...so how should i drive it?

I've always wondered about this 1000 mile - do not boost/do not rev over 3K stuff.
It makes me laugh because there were so few of these cars produced that I would think that many of them were test driven at the dealerships.
I wonder how many test drivers, salesman babied the engines? I remember getting one up to 125MPH during a test drive 11 years ago. I didn't know any better, but I do remember the salesman saying "go for it!"

Here's wat i've heard. For the first 500 miles, vary the rpm range from idle to 3500 - 4000. You can run about 5 - 8 lbs of boost. This way, it let's the seals reconform the the housings and stuff like that. Try not to go into wot (i know it's kinda hard), so that you do not blow another seal or so. Anyways, good luck to ya.
