Just got car back. Has 100 miles since rebuild on it. Wondering if it is ill advised or not to drive her up to northern cali and back this weekend. Of course wouldnt boost and would keep under 3200 or so RPM but wondering if running the car for that long this soon after rebuild is OK for it or not? If it is OK that would be great so I can get her broken in quicker. about 600 miles round trip.

I read somewhere during brake in rotaries don't like constant rpm's like highway driving. Maybe i am wrong.

That would be fine -- but a lot of builders always tell you to vary the RPMs during the break-in period. So if you can vary the RPMs a bit during that trip, I think it would be fine.

I drove mine from Seattle to SoCal with a 100mi on rebuild or 1st/original rebuild and had no problems.

yep that is a perfect trip for a break in.

do a search on break in procedures. tons of threads on it. just don't hold a steady speed and you'll be aok.

I drove my freshly rebuilt motor from KDR in PA all the way up to central Mass. It ran and drove fine and has been going strong for 6k miles. Varying the RPMs for the trip is a good idea, and stay out of the boost!

why do some say that rebuilds dont need a break in ? i understand that they are reused parts with new parts so it does not need a break in ?

....ive heard everything. Some mechanics say its a 5 min break in, others say dont take it over 5k. i would just vary the RPM's and dont get on it hard.

When you say stay out of the boost you mean like 10 to 12 lbs, right? Is going to like 5 or 8 ok? (and sometimes it is unavoidable.) Just curious.

I stayed out of boost as in vacuum only for the first 1k miles. Most people would say thats very very conservative, but I'd much rather be safe than sorry. I figured the more I baby the motor in the beginning, the better it'll be in the long run.

I was directed by Skip at KDR (Skip now of anti-detonation device fame mind you) on my break-in procedure, and I've posted it here a few times, search for it.

so what exactly is the break in period? 1k miles under various rpms?? or a few hundred miles with a constant more moderate rpm??

if they replace the bearings, you need a longer break in period, other-wise there isnt much to the motor. I am sure you want to give it a few miles to let everything re-seat itself. Just what I have heard.

Not that anyone really cares, or will follow me on this... But:

How much breaking in do these things really need? I mean, a few full warm-ups and maybe a hundred miles of driving should do the same thing as 1000 miles of driving and a bunch of babying, no?

I watched Peter Ferrell drop fresh motors in cars and head straight to the track.. ? Whether you like him or not is irrelevant.

Not trying to start a big *** argument (That normally the average thread ends up as).. Just curious where the long break-ins started.

you can run 6psi on a 10.5:1 compression piston motor...as in, it doesn't stress it that much

i'd say leave your wastegate wide open and you'll be fine

as far as boosting during break in

i personally, like 911GT2 stay in vaccum...i wasn't tuned though

When I picked mine up it had 500 miles on the rebuild. I drove it from SoCal to Washington (1200mi). It ran great, although I only stopped for gas and never shut the car down. I varied the RPMs as best as I could, but the stayed between 2000 and 4000 the whole time. There were long periods at 3000. The motor starts and runs great, pout 5000 miles on since then. Will get a compression check done soon to see the internal health of the motor.

im about to get my car back from my friends shop after gettin a new core...so how should i drive it?
maintain 2k-4k RPM's like x605p747R1
while at the same time trying to vary RPMS within that range and not stepping on gas too hard as to not boost?

im rocking the same boat as you. except im from nor cal going to so cal. im gonna do it after the first 300 miles i put on my motor ( testing the waters ). ive only done 20 miles so far.

I've always wondered about this 1000 mile - do not boost/do not rev over 3K stuff.

It makes me laugh because there were so few of these cars produced that I would think that many of them were test driven at the dealerships.

I wonder how many test drivers, salesman babied the engines? I remember getting one up to 125MPH during a test drive 11 years ago. I didn't know any better, but I do remember the salesman saying "go for it!"

Here's wat i've heard. For the first 500 miles, vary the rpm range from idle to 3500 - 4000. You can run about 5 - 8 lbs of boost. This way, it let's the seals reconform the the housings and stuff like that. Try not to go into wot (i know it's kinda hard), so that you do not blow another seal or so. Anyways, good luck to ya.
