Rebuild Required ?

i know i know , ya gonna tell me to search , i have but want some conformation.
A friend of mine cannot start his car (RX7 Type R).
Whilst driving on a fairly cold engine and pushing the throttal to climb a hill he heard a pop and fell as though somthing had fallen off his car, at the same time the engine died, he got it started but was v lumpy and when he pressed the throttal it slowly climed to 4k the slowly back down then died all together.
got towed home and on close inspection his back box was full of holes, he replaced the box thinking it was this but no joy.
now it will not start.
there is a distinked 3 pops per rotation from the tailpipe (there should be 6 per rotation?)
We have disconected the fule relay turned her over on wot placed atf in the plugs and continued this process for days then checked the compresion, on a cold engine there is no compression on the rear rotor at all and only a tiny little bit on the front rotor, we have been using a piston compresion guage with the valve removed and the pressure relese valve pressed in and out.
We have checked for a spark on all plug leads, we have changed all plugs and we have checked for fuel and all is ok but it will not even try to fire up.
The gurus here will prolly confirm what we suspect.
Is it time to rebuild ?
thanx steve

sorry no can do.
this car is on a budget.
i know you guys will cringe but i guess some people do own these cars that dont have a gr8t deal of finances available to them, so a workshop is out of the question.
is there anything else we should be checking for or anything that will confirm a rebuild required as we intend doing it ourselfs.
thanx steve

No compression is a pretty bad sign. I would think you popped an apex seal or two. If you can afford it, get someone that has a Mazda compression checker and see what the results are. But I see a rebuild in your friend's future...

just caught a thread on compresion testing and seems iv forgotten to test at wot with a plug out of each rotor, should the way i have tested returned at least some compresion as i hardly got the needle to move ?
i tested with only 1 plug out at a time and no throttal.
gonna test again tomorrow with a plug out of the front and rear and at wot.
but my curiosity is is getting the better of me, if anyone knows if the way i tested should have given at least some resuls ?
btw 0psi in rear and 20psi on front .
thanx steve

If you're questioning whether you have 0 psi, you can confirm fairly easily. Cover the spark plug hole with your finger and, if you have any substantial pressure at all, it'll push your finger off the hole.
