I was talking with this mechanic who specializes in import performance and I mentioned to him that I was thinking about getting an RX-7. He said that they werent very good cars as daily drivers, which is what i want for in the summer. He also said that you have to rebuild the engines every 60,000 miles. Is that true?

 

Yes, exactly at 60k. Seriously...no, it's not true. Do a search, about 500 people have asked the same question as you. If you're looking for something thats cheap, reliable and able to take alot of beating, the RX-7 is wrong for you.

Hmmm that does seem a bit high maybe it was 200'000. Either way, it's pretty good. I've only had mine for about 3 months, so can't really comment. I guess if you look after it really well, then theres no reason a stock engine couldn't rack up the kms. Unfortunately, when buying a 10+ year old used car there is almost no way of knowing if the car has been looked after well. And people tend to thrash them a bit because lets face it - it's not a granny car. So it's kind of like a lucky dip. Just make sure you can afford the prize

 

i hate to say this but the seven is not for everybody. You have to be willing to tinker, crank, pull, and play with it a lot. I can't imagine owning one of these and not knowing how to work on it. You have to know how to troubleshoot it and fix it unless you have mucho dinero and can have the mechanic look at it. The engine is not bulletproof, nor will it ever be. It can be made quite reliable as discussed on this forum and extensively on www.scuderiaciriani.com. But if you want quick, cheap, dirty fun the rx7 is not it.

however, i must say this: It is the best all-round performance car ever built. An engineering marvel to this day. The rx8 is a vegetable compared to the fd.
