Unhappy Race Tranny?

Is there a way to make the tranny strong as hell so I can quit having to worry about breaking somthing. seems like everytime I go out racing I mess somthing up. Just got the car back with the new engine, did one race and 5th gear synchro is going out on it.

I heard you can mix a 3rd gen and a T2 tranny and make one bad *** tranny. At least thats what my mechanic says "Lopez Racing"

The stock tranny is actually fairly beefy for most applications. Most people have problems with the clutch or diff, but the standard tranny problems (i.e. 5th gear synchro) are common to even stock FD's. It doesn't really have much to do about power.

i've cracked the case on one and binded all the gears in another lol, that damn 1 2 shift with street slicks usually does it.

It sounds more like you might be tearing up your tranny from your shifting style.

Any-ho... Try contacting Pettit Racing. I believe they sell trannies that are a little beefed up.

Perhaps it's your method of shifting...

It's you, not the car. Lots of people running around with 300+ rwhp and no tranny problems.....

The only time your going to run into tranny problems because of too much power is when your making 650rwhp and up. The torque produced shears the output shaft and input shaft on the tranny in half. I know, I've done it. If your not making close to 600rwhp, then you need to just tame your driving style a bit. 5th gear syncro breaks alot if you miss 3rd and go into 5th by accident. If your having this problem, buy the Mazdaspeed short shift kit. Not only will it make almost impossible for a mis-shift, it will shorten the gear throw by more than half. By far, its the best one on the market.

I think there's an Australian company that makes one for about $10k.

The problem with the Guru is its still uses the stock input and output shaft. And its $5500.00
For that much, you can get a 5spd. G-force tranny and never worry about anyting again.

When you say "racing" do you mean strip (drag racing) or track (road racing)? If it's the latter, have you tried to learn how to heel/toe the downshifts? Double-clutching can also help on the upshift.

I should make clear that I was not advocating the guru, only responding with a name to the previous post which mentioned an australian tranny.

There are only a couple tranny parts known for breaking, and they have upgraded replacements:
- 5th gear synchro
- select spindle (just a stiffer spring to keep speds who can't shift from breaking the 5th synchro when they miss 3rd - would this describe you by chance?)
- clutch fork (stronger to last longer and/or handle heavier PPs)

I suggest you get these parts installed, and then wait to see if you grind it up. If so, then maybe worry about upgrading it.

Dave

i dont ever miss 3rd, I hit it really good thats one of my best shifts, have short throw, engine torque brace, solid motor mounts and rear diff brace so none of it moves. just seems like everytime I go out and race and I drag it usually the shifter feels loose and hard to get in 5th

if the problem is just 5th, it's probably the synchro. just double clutch that shift until you get it fixed. and maybe slow down your shifting, its better to let it fall into place than to force it there.

For that much you can get a T56 6-speed and the LS1 attached to it, and be well on your way to never worrying about the transmission or the engine again...

If he wanted a mullett, he would have bought a z-28. Put your LS1 in your 7. Put up against my 7. Who do you think will win? Little clue.......NOT YOU!! And yes, it'll run just as long as your piston mullett machine.
