R1 or base...?
I did a search but couldn't find what I was looking for...
My car is a 93, the guy I bought it from said it was an R1 but he lied about most things so this could be or not.
I have dual oil coolers, no cruise control nor any evidence of ever having it. The seats and suspension were changed before I bought the car... any ideas on how I can find out? I need to know to make sure I get the correct evaporator for my a/c.
Thanks!

It's a 5spd I hope.
Also, what color is the receiver/dryer/accumulator? Black or raw aluminum?
In actuality, if it is a 93 and doesn't have a sunroof, you have a base or an R, both of which have the same A/C parts.

That's good to know.
The dryer is black, the lines going to it are raw alum.
original color is Vintage Red, yes its a 5 spd. I do not have a sunroof...
Thanks for the help you guys.

I don't think the VIN indicates a model other than FD. Although anything could have been added, I think the dual oil coolers are a pretty reliable indication that it is indeed, an R1.
Not sure, but I wasn't aware that the R1/Base models necessarily required different AC components.
If it helps, it's either a NIPPON-DENSO or MANA. Look at your drier. One of the MANA drier lines goes out initially at a 90 degree angle from the other then goes parallel, while the NIPPON lines both start out basically parallel from the top of the drier. The mounting bracket for the MANA is welded to the body of the drier, while the NIPPON has a wrap around type bracket.

One of the bitches in tracking down such specific info on the A/C is that a lot.....maybe all, I'm not sure.....but a lot of the A/C systems were installed at the port of entry into the U.S. I think there's an A/C sticker on the underside of your hood. Check there to see if there's any additional info.
And do a search on the forum. I know this has been talked about before, but it may have been a number of years back.

Register your vehicle VIN with Mazda USA and they can tell you a lot about the vehicle (exterior/interior colors and major options). You should be able to do it through their website. I did it (I know mine is a '94 touring) and the information Mazda provided was dead on.

Just to confirm, I registered using only the Year, Model and VIN, and it correctly indicated that my car was an R1.
Unfortunately we're all still left with no indication of which particular number(s) within the VIN record the trim (i.e. Base; R1, Touring, etc.) So the individual owner or prospective buyer still must go to the site.
