quick question.underhood lining important at all?
Ok so while I was working on my car yesterday it was very windy and the lining that is on the underside of the hood is halfway hanging off right now because the wind managed to blow the damn thing off. What is its purpose? Im thinking heat insulation. But wouldnt you want the heat to escape? So I guess the question is.Can I remove it and not screw something up? Like the paint on top of the hood since there would be less protection from the roatary's heat? Thanx.

basically it will allow your hood to get hotter and the paint will fade quicker or wont last as long
it also serves as a fireblanket. the pins that hold it in melt off in a fire and its supposed to fall on the entire engine bay and help to smother a fire. I dont think it works too well though cause ive seen a few fire fds
if its falling apart I say take it off. It will take a long time to notice the effects of the heat on the hood

I took mine off couple days ago. It made the engine a little louder but whats wrong with that It also cleans the appearance up a tad aswell. I say take it off.
Just wax your hood more often. I think the extra heat might kill the wax faster.

Mine's been off for god knows how long. The paint UNDER the hood is kinda gone where the engine sits, but the paint on the surface of the hood was unaffected from the heat. That was also after 5-6 years of it not being there im sure

I have been thinking of taking mine off and replacing it with some fire-proof, reflective material from Summit.
BTW, mine had an engine fire before I bought it and the lining is toast but the clips are still in perfect shape, go figure

mine was hanging
if yours is hanging by a few threads get rid of it. if it comes apart and gets into the pulleys i imagine it could make a mess? i have been without it for 2 yrs now with no problems with paint or noise

It's no wonder we have so many POS FD's around. All of them are at least 10 years old now and there are things that will need to be replaced on occasion!
It's ridiculous.
Air conditioning leaking? Don't fix it, remove it.
Power steering problems? Don't fix it, remove it.
ABS pump bad? Don't fix it, remove it.
Fluid leaks? As long as the car won't catch fire they're fine.
Diff bushings shot? Don't fix it, add a diff brace.
Engine mounts shot? Don't fix them, add an engine brace.
Hood insulator worn through? Don't fix it, trash it.
Spend some money and fix the car right. I can't count the number of FD's I have seen where the owner has spent thousands and thousands of dollars to mod the car and yet the car is in terrible mechanical condition and the mod work looks like it was performed by monkeys with hammers. People are only interested in building paper cars: On paper the mod list looks impressive and it may even go fast. In person it looks like a POS that may go fast but god knows I would never wish to drive it that way for fear of my life.

I think of it this way: it adds a bit of weight, although not much. Mazda's engineers, who were interested in saving weight, decided that it's more of a benefit to have that hood liner in there, than save those few ounces. So because of that, I think it's safe to assume that it serves a purpose, and is worth having on there.
Until you find out the EXACT reason that Mazda put that thing on there, I would leave it on. The internet tends to make people seem smarter than they really are, don't take everything on here as absolutely true just because someone who has posted hundreds of messages on the RX7Club says so.
Good luck,

I removed mine about a month ago because it was in such trashy shape. It will probably affect the paint in the long run, but I will be getting a vented hood within the next few months.

I was wondering... mine is gone as well.... I'm trying to find a replacement and I saw the dynomat company had hood liners that reduce engine noise up to 50% and reflects heat like 70% or something like that..... I want my engine to be quiet....
has anyone have any experience on this???
