Question quick fan mod question

first might be a lil long but i split it up so you can skip around,

K i did the dave disney mod where you splice into the two fan relays under the hood exactly instructed on his site. From the two relays i ran the wires to a single wire. BTW if i were to ground that single wire without the ignition on or anything the fans would come on. So i ran the wire to a two way SPST switch inside the car. And then ran another wire from the switch to a ground.

Now with the car off if works great, switch on = fans on, switch off = fans off. Now i start the car up for the first time with everything hooked up and then fans come on (dont remember if the switch was on when i started it or off) so the car is on and the fans are going. I try to turn the switch off but the fans keep going. I then disconnected the ground from the switch but fans keep going. I shut the car down but the fans keep going. Connected switch back but fans keep going.

K now am i just stupid and is that how the fan mod is supposed to work or is it supposed to be switch on fans on, switch off fans off. And is there the 10 min time period where the fans stay on after the car is shutdown for this type of fan mod. sorry just a lil confused, i ended up disconnecting the negative battery terminal untill i could look up as many threads about it as i could but nuthing that pertains to my situation.

TIA to any who read all this and help

wow you got a 3d gen? I must have missed it congrats.

Any way Yes the fans do stay on for 10 minutes usually when the car is shut down and its up to full operating temperatures. Mine used to do that however now it stopped. You should be able to turn them on and off with the switch especially if the car isn't hot. With mine if it was going for those 10 minutes after shutdown the off position would be low speed and on was high speed. Any other time it was on and off.

There are different ways to hook up the fan mod so this is a good question.

The Disney fan mod won't work on medium speed if your car has had the fan wiring update. It will work on actuating low speed on the radiator fans by grounding relays no. 2 & 4 , but if you try to ground relay no.3 to get medium speed, it only triggers the 10-minute fan sequence. You may have the wrong relays or wires grounded, because you're triggering the 10-minute sequence with just two relays (quite possible, because the relays are simply mounted on a bracket, and they can easily be switched around inadvertently).

The only way to trigger medium speed is to ensure that relays 2 & 4 are already energized (grounded) and the fans running on low speed when you ground relay no. 3. This means that you need a double pole switch, or two separate switches to activate medium speed.

Disney did the fan mod on my car a little different than what he does on his site. We tapped into only one of the relays. I'll see if I can get him to do another write up.

dave's car did not have the recall timer box installed.

with recall timer, basic fan mod switch gnds relay 3. this gives instant fans for some, 2 minute delayed 'on' for others. did u try this?

u likely have the recall timer for the fan. if standard switch off the timer box test wire does not give instant fans, use your switch for just relays 2/4. this gives instant low speed, not much diff than med speed.

another switch could then be used for relay 3 or the test wire, if u want fans to run 10 min aft shut dn. this switch kicks to med speed if low speed is already on, and also can set timer if on for 2 minutes.

for timer, likely both switches on 2 minutes before shut down, then both off 20 sec aft shut down.

k so if i have the wiring up date and i ground relay 3 this will give me an instant fan with the switch on(if i dont have the 2 min thing) No if i have that if i turn the switch off will the fans go off or will they stay on for a period of time.

basically if i wire it right is there a way to have an on-off switch for the fans when the car is on?

thanks alot, im starting to pick up on the whole fan situation. and thanks snook, yea i got it about 3 months ago. 93 black w/ red 2k on streetported motor. But car has only seen a max of 5 psi since ive had it( turbos are almost done for, but i have a set of jspecs that need to be switched on as well as a DP that was included in the sale)

Like I said, you can have a low-speed setting anytime with the fan wiring update, but in order to run medium speed with the radiator fans whenever you want, you have to ground relay no. 3 with the fans already running. This requires either a double-pole switch or two separate single pole switches.

On my car (which has the fan wiring update), I grounded the black/green wire from the no. 2 relay to get low-speed on the radiator fans whenever I wanted. Actually, I think it doesn't matter which black/green wire (on no. 2 or no. 4 relay) you ground, as I believe they're tied together with the fan wiring update. However, some others I've spoken to have different color coding on the wires, so your car may not be the same.

FWIW, I'll throw this in here...

I have a 94 with the wiring update. With the Disney mod, I was able to turn the fans on Medium (I think) at anytime, ignition on or off. This caused me problems because at least twice I forgot to flip the switch and killed my battery. Also, with my FMIC, having the fans on meduim wasn't doing the trick. I played around with grounding various relays and was able to wire a switch to turn the fans on high, which is usually only achievable with the A/C on. This helps bring the temps down when need be. As an added benefit, the switch does not work with the ignition off, so I can't kill my battery anymore. The best part is that on my car, all I'm doing to achieve this is grounding a single wire. I can't remember which relay/color I'm grounding, but can look if anyone is interested. If it matters, I have a Power FC.

could ya check that out because i think my problem is ive got two relays connected and then grounded and somewhere in there its causing them to go on automatically. I dont want them automatically, i want to choose when to come on. Ima try diff relays to see if maybe mine got switched.

Yep, I'd say it does, because the fan wiring update has power going to the relays even with the ignition off. Thus grounding any of the relays should not be affected by the position of the ignition key.
