Question for any fd owners.
Question for any fd owners.
Im coming to a road in life where I will have the opportunity to buy a car. My dilemma has to do with the nature of the buy. So the question is , why did you buy your fd or any other related vehicle. Was it your dream car? Was it the performance? Or was it the sheer beauty of what it represents? Im stuck between this awesome car and my dream car. So please, tell me your thoughts.
I wanted a great performance car for a good price, my FD just came to me and after seeing it I had to buy it. I think what attracted me to it was it's uniqueness and it's timeless shape. Get on the road in a FD and you most likely will be the only one on the road with one. I think it's nice owning something that is rarely seen on the road. Also it's timeless shape is awesome, after buying my car I had a friend ask me if it was a 13, I was like yeah "13B" and then I caught myself and noticed he meant was it a 2013, I couldn't help but smile

I love how they look, and I love how they feel.
I love that when driving my head is at about the same height as the average sedans door handle.
I love that the max power is high in the RPM range so it keeps on pulling harder and harder where other cars would have dropped off.
I love how you can throw it around corners, and how nimble and light it feels..
I could go on and on...i love these cars!

Sorry i didnt see your question earlier. Honestly it would be a mk4 supra. The only problem for me is it became the opposite of what I loved it for, but it still has that something special for me as does the rx7. The rx7 doesnt hit as deep, but I feel The 7 would give me much more pleasure than the supra would. That being said, where I live there is nothing but straight roads and long highways.

I bought my FD purely as a non-daily driver, it gets out maybe 30 days out of the year. I'd wanted one from the day I saw my first one in '93, but having a newborn at that time meant I got a Suburban instead, lol! So I waited around 7 years before I purchased mine. I love the styling and performance; the styling is timeless and the performance is still fairly decent, even up against some of the new cars. Finally, I love the fact they are so rare and that one hardly ever sees another one, at least here in Kansas, lol! It has been over two years since I've seen another one out and about.
To me, the Supra makes more sense for cruising. It has luxury and modern engine electronics might even allow for decent fuel economy to go along with turbo-boosted passing power. There's no reason you couldn't tune it for handling rather than the power builds some people go for.
The FD is happiest on winding roads, hills and tracks. It's meant to go very fast, and not just in a straight line. The tight cockpit, road noise, poor fuel economy, and firm ride would make long trips less than enjoyable.
It's my dream car, but not a very practical car. The FD is kind of like a jet fighter – it does a few things very well, but only those things.
I have a Saturn SC2 as a daily driver and it is far more practical, even for a coupe. Four seats, a lot more trunk room, comfortable ride, and good fuel economy. It doesn't blow me away when I look at it and drive it like the FD does, though.

for me it was my Dream car. i had always grew up around cars and when i saw an FD when i was 6 i was hooked. i begged and begged my dad who is a wholesale car dealer to buy one which didnt happen. then came my 17th birthday and a ton of saving up and i bought my FD and while i dont drive it as much as i would like to being 2 hours from the car i still love seeing it when i go home and i would only sell it for some crazy cash offer.
My first RX-7 purchase was in 98. When these cars came out (93 FD) I was enamored on how they looked (I could had cared less about the performance). About a year after graduating from college I decided to go car shopping. Ya know felt stable in my job and I was finally making good money.Anyway I test drove several newer cars like BMW 325, 300zx, camaro, Z3... none of which really spoke to me. One day looking at the auto trader magazine (yep magazine) I came across a 93 RX-7 and I was like 'huh, I forgot about those'. So off I went to go check it out. I must say I was literally 100 yards into my test drive and I was hooked. I bought it that day... Didn't even know the car was a rotary lol. Truth be told it was the looks that reeled me in but ultimately it was the car's feel that sealed the deal.
Edit-
Drive them both.
Unfortunately my first FD died in a fire a couple of months after my purchase. So a few months after the fact i was back in the saddle for a new car once again. Given my experience with the FD, this time around I was more focused on the performance side of things. Gave the camaro another shot, drove an M3, I also got the opportunity to test drive a twin turbo supra (and actually beat on it a little). I must say though, to me nothing compared to how the FD felt. Yeah some of those felt faster (and probably were) but ultimately nothing gave me the feel of the FD. So I ended up buying another and haven't looked back since
. Shoot for fun in 2004 I test drove a $165K porsche turbo and honestly my modified FD felt just as good if not better lol. So again drive them both and make a decision based on that. Just make sure you drive decent examples.

But they didn't stay on long. Loved the looks and performance, especially for the day. Sold the FB a couple years later to buy my first house. Then marriage, then my daughter, then a son, then a bigger house...and, eventually, another RX7. Damn I'm getting old.
I drove a honda Prelude and thought the handling and everything was pretty good. I had decked out the suspension, race tires, etc. I then drove my roommates rx7 R1 and that car handled better than my prelude. It was an amazing car, so I went on over the years driving other cars which were all less superior to the rx7 I had driven. I decided that this is the car I want due to the ergonomics, handling/feel, speed, modability, looks, sounds, etc, etc. It is a dream car among a very short list.
If I had a ton of money, I would probably build another rx7, I would try and find a test drive in a Ford GT, and a Porsche GT2. Everything else is ehhhh.

I always wanted a 90's japanese performance car. Supra was too big and heavy, NSX was too expensive to make fast, always thought vr-4 and z32 to be overcomplicated turds so that just left the FD. Still very happy with my decision although NSX is still on my list.
The FD is a different animal! Ive owned a s2000, 350z, Turbo civics, integras etc. Its a great car depending on the condition you buy the car in. I bought mine from a one owner and it was so close that I couldnt pass it up because I have been looking for years. Its expensive and most people want to charge the " FD" tax. Also, not many people know how to work on these and if you do have a good shop in the area that is mentioned on this board you are lucky. So far I have replaced the radiator, check valves and changed the spark plugs, 3 inch dp, boost gauge, new battery, oil change and inspection on my FD. After doing those things I now see why FD's can be expensive to work on and fustrating if it will be a persons first time working or modifying a car. I daily drive an 02 civic with 38 mpg which helps when the FD is down.
I bought my first FD in 06 and I still have it to this day. It was actually the first car I ever bought on my own out of high school. It has slowly become a not DD. I have driven in up and down the east coast and I have learned a lot of lessons in it. I love my car and don't think I will ever let it go. The beauty and grace of this car are unrivaled IMO. NTM the comments and looks I get when I drive it make the pain of maintenance worth it. If you want a quick DD it is possible just be aware that you must set a goal and stick to it. As anyone here will tell you it will tie up some money owning this car. FD=Financial Disaster. If you take care of it however it will take care of you.
Its the most attainable car that if its not a POS is more rewarding to own and drive than cars costing 4-5 times as much money. Its stunningly beautiful and has a feel no new car can ever have due to modern safety requirements.
It has many shortcomings all of which mean more or less to different people. I've wanted one for 11-12 years and finally have the right one. I've spent enough money on it to where i dont even want to think about it really..lol
but...nothing affordable looks this good:

Love that profile shot of his car. Almost perfect, just lose the ugly 99 front which makes the nose look chunky(which he did, though it looks fine from this angle) and its perfect.
And this one is mine...love it right to death.

For me the FD was just the perfect choice at the time in my life when I bought it. Being someone who likes speed and stance, and after running hondas for over 15 years, beginning NA, and learning to build/modify them myself then moving on to Forced Induction, I developed my technical abilities. Wanting to make a change to learn something different, the rotary powered FD was the PERFECT platform that would keep me occupied technicaly, and would also become my BEAUTY and a BEAST.
I have had mine many years now and have no plans of parting with it.
