question about turbos (searched to no avail)
I searched for two hours with no definitive answer. I have the twins, only 30K on them (as far as I know). I got the twins from a friend who had them on his car, they worked fine and boosted great with no problems. He upgraded to single so he sold me his engine and turbos as a package, since the engine and turbos have been in my car they are misting a good amount of oil.
Under hard acceleration there is no smoke, but after the burst of hard acceleration smoke will wisp out of the tail pipe (white, prolly oil) for about 20 seconds followed by a small puff occasionally from under the hood (passenger side, cant really pinpoint where smoke is rising from). I looked at the DP but there was little or no oil where it comes off the exhaust manifold. Oil seems to be collecting around the outside of the y pipe on the drivers side. Near this area of oil buildup there is a line in of some sort that can be easily pulled out by hand and replaced (drivers side of y pipe, right where the y is-its the closest line to the front of the car), I have no idea if this has to do with anything.
There is a little oil around the intake of the primary turbo, but not as much as around the y pipe. The coupling to the y pipe is pretty solid. There is no oil on the compressor side of the primary turbo, cant see the secondary turbo.
Something else caught my eye, there was oil on the underside of the main cat, but none on the DP (atleast so much as I could see and feel without the car up on jacks). I have 3 inches up to the engine except for a high flow cat, the cat is NOT hooked up to an air pump. It hasnt been hooked up for about 3000 miles.
Could the cat be clogged and cause this stuff? I really dont think its the turbos themselves, checked the oil lines for the turbos as far as I could see without removing anything. Damn I hope its not my turbos .
Tomorrow I am going to wash the turbos and see if I can pinpoint where this oil is coming from, prolly put it up on a jack and get my hands dirty. Any insight that you all might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for spending the time to read my ramblings-B

i had similar symptoms that you have before i rebuilt my turbos. now that they are rebuilt they are all good
check your turbos for play.
some radial play is ok
end to end (axial) play is bad and you want that to be minimal. that's how oil typically gets out, through the compressor side or the turbine side.

Sounds like your turbos may possibly be going... The oil on the cat is just from where ever your car is leaking oil and as you drive at high speeds, it trickles down and builds up on it and probably other places... Look around on the underbody of the car, is oil located in random locations?
Sounds like you have a pretty good leak

So here is what happened today, I washed the engine bay of the oil and took it for a spin on some back roads. I did not smoke at all under boost, however my boost pattern was 10-8-5. After I drove the car spiritedly I pulled over to see if there was oil coming out of the turbos. There was no smoke eminating out of the passenger side, I couldnt see the secondary but the primary was clean as a whistle. The engine bay was misted in oil b/c of the BOV. After this check I pulled out and gunned it a little and left a poof of smoke behind me, but after boosting again there was no more smoke. I drove for another 5 minutes agressively-no more smoke, same boost pattern. I then had to stop at a stop sign for a minute then got back on it again. This time it did not smoke under boost, but when I was blowing off in between gears, directly after the blow off came a puff from the engine bay. I then pulled over and lifted the hood. A bit of smoke came out from what seemed the y pipe. I think it was caused by the oil in the blow off that came in contact with the manifold (that stuff goes everywhere), but could be from the second turbo . I drove it the rest of the way back home boosting occasionally with no smoke from behind and no smoke billowing from the engine bay at all, including while stopped at stoplights.
Anyways, here are my guesstimations
good guesstimation- my cat is clogged causing the secondary turbo to blow oil and only boost to 5 psi. The oil that is being blown is collecting in my SMIC and these puddles are occasionally being sucked up under high boost causing occasional puffs of smoke. I know this sounds unlikely but I am an optimist.
Bad guesstimation (probably the correct one)-my secondary turbo is blown and my parents were right when they warned me about spending my money on a rex
I have no idea whats going on with it, need to put it on a lift and gut the **** out of it and see whats ailing my baby. Until then I am open for any suggestions as to what you'all think. Thanks again for lookin'-B
