Question about my lights dimming

At night when I have the lights on driving and I press the brake all my lights dim.. The headlights, the gauge lights everything... Im not sure what it is I just changed out the alternator a few weeks ago because it went out so I figured that was going to fix it but it didnt... Any ideas?

yea, aftermarket pulleys would do it... other than that, you must have a big *** system in your car...

I have a similar problem. Lights on, step on brake pedal, lights dim for a second and come back to full bright.

Is that what you're talking about?

Mine was doing that too. It took my car to my mechanic for other stuff and when I got it back the lighting thing was fixed. He didn't charge me for it and I never asked because I didn't notice it until days later.

I'll call him up and ask what the deal was.

it maybe your battery. check and see if there is any corrosion on the battery terminals. the battery cover does a great job keeping out moisture, but however it does carry the "greenhouse effect" with moisture not escaping the box. if that seems good after you check it, you may want to check your grounds, there is a big ground towards the aft end of the battery that can get pretty corroded (SP?). also a battery tender/voltage stabilizer would be great. they add power by efficiently grounding out the car and properly distributing power correctly evenly to components. i would reccomend the Sun Automobile Hot Earth voltage stabilizer, it is worth the $250 or so. now if you are really screwed, you may want to snag a voltage repair kit because they have a device in there that will tell you where the wire break is or where there is a frayed wire that is not getting adequit voltage. i hope this helps, i have to get back to work

Looks like I may have found the problem today... My battery is actually mounted in the rear forgot to mention that... Well today went to crank the car up nothing no power at all... Went over all my connections they were all good voltage tested the battery it was good... Well come to find out the actual connections for the battery are a shitty kind some Im just going to rerun the battery cables and get the connectors that you build yourself with solder? and what not... Also get the battery out of the middle of the hatch and put it in the jacks compartment thing

Nope mine is stock exterior wise. Except for aftermarket wheels and a seibon hood.

Unhappy

I'm having this problem too, any solution?

I already installed grounding wire and volts stablizer.

Voltage measure at 12.4v before start and 14+ after the car has started.

Cheers,
Jason

lol holy ****. im not alone, i replaced my battery. am going to put all new connectors on it. check my major grounds. and make sure theres no bare spots on the wiring, it started out just the blinkers would flicker but now its dash lights and everything else dims when i aply brakes. i had my heater on full blast and the ac running to get moisture outa the air as well so it kinda had a strain on the system. i do have aftermarket pullys. lol my car fogs up horribly i need to fix that sometime but ill let you guys know if my little fixes for the wiring help any

The lights dimming for about 1/2 second after a load is applied is a characteristic of the Mazda alternator. WHAT IT IS: Is a time constant built into the voltage regulator and is not a fault. It is true, however, that poor connections, poor grounding, underdrive pulleys, etc. can make it more noticable.

An alternator or regulator retrofit might reduce or eliminate this problem.

My '93 has always done this (since it was new). It continued to do it when I put the battery in the back and got noticeable worse when I installed underdrive pulleys, the later which is to be expected.

Hope this helps.
