question about a friends 3rd gen
ok a friend of mine just got a mont. blue touring 3rd gen. its got a odd thing. the 1st turbo is making a hell of a lot of noise, it sounds like a hose off not like a metal sound. are there any hoses that tend to come loose on the 1st turbo? the sound only happens when the 1st turbo is boosting. its a stock 100% car.
Is it a whooshing sound or a metal crackling/vibration? This can be very hard to determine. If is not a intake hose cracked he might have a stud loose that holds the turbos on to the motor itself. If you look in the service manual you can locate them in the sequential turbo section. Unfortunately some times they strip out and have to be replaced. Also if there is one stripped beyond the turbo housing, you have to remove the turbos to fix it. I currently have this problem. I can barely get it tight and it becomes loose again after a few hundred miles. I hope this gets you on your way. Start simple by checking all the hoses and lines around that area.G..
There are a few places were you would have some problems with the boost. Make sure to check the intercooler hose, and Y-Pipe first. Just remove these hoses and inspect them very well to make sure there isn't any cracks on them. If everything seems fine, make sure to properly put them back on. Make sure that they are not loose. If the hose is a little bit loose you will start hearing the noise you described and you will loose some boost. Also, someone already mentioned about the boost gauge. The boost gauge is extremely important and will help us out to diagnose the problem. Good luck.
