Pulling engine out with transmission attached

Hey guys,

I'm trying to pull out the engine with transmission out of my FD and was just wondering if it's possible. If it is, I must be doing something wrong. I'm not a noob so please don't run me though the basics. The problem I'm having is the transmission gets wedged into the transmission tunnel before the engine mounts are completly out of the frame. I have the front of the car raised up pretty high and still no luck.

I put my motor in with the transmission, so they should be able to come out together. I remember having the motor/trans at a steep angle going in

Yep! A shot pulling a friend's motor a few years ago. Do you have a load leveler on your hoist?

I'm assuming that you removed the shifter.

I personally like to pull the engine/tranny together. For some reason, it just seems easier to me.

wow, embarassing but I'll admit it. I some how forgot to remove the shifter... I dont know how but maybe because my interior is half way torn apart?

I didnt need the leveler to pull it all out after the shifter was out. When I worked at a shop back in high school we used to just stick a screw driver into the chain to keep it from sliding and that has always worked for me.

Thanks for you help guys, I owe you a beer.

Maybe too late now, but I found this to be very helpful when I was doing my engine last winter:

No, I personally don't. I just throw the chains on the motor and rip it out, kind of like the pictures posted above.

Putting a jack under the end of the tranny (by where the drive shaft bolts) is a great way to help take it out.

And yes, take your hood off, makes everything so much easier.

Yup, watch out noob zone! hehe

I need to fix the 5th grear on the transmission, reseal and install the oil pan brace on the engine, new clutch and just clean up the engine bay. Then it all goes back in and hopefully will start driving it. The suspension is 100% complete and installed... looks so nice being brand new.
