proper placement of EGT sensors?

I have heard Pineapple racing and others talk of installing egt sensors for each exhaust runner before the turbo (turbo's for some). Just curious if this means drilling and taping the motor of some way or are we talking drilling the exhaust manifold and tapping there? Sorry if this is a silly question but this is the first I have looked into this. This would be for an after market single turbo manifold.

depends on how long you want your probes to last.

close to the exhaust port is probably the best for the most accurate readings, but the probes can die a lot sooner than if they (one) were placed after the turbo.

Yes I agree the probes would die sooner but atleast you could get accurate reading for each exhaust runner.. Thats my goal for this mod. How much are probes? How many miles can you expect out of them?

They're talking about drilling/tapping the exhaust manifold.

i got a probe from one of those ebay companies~~whoever... it worked fine, but was pretty slow reacting. $50ish

i think if you buy the "greedy" brand name probe, it's more like $150ish or so.

you know. . . i had thought about this before. . . i put my egt sensor behind the turbo because i figured id just use the egt gauge as a warning or something. . . and use the wideband as the tuning setup.

also, if youre tuning with a powerfc. . . what does it matter? its not like you can do anything with the more accurate readings/rotor. . .

I bought a probe from the first website listed. Omega and the other links sell probes as well. I believe all of them sell fast acting probes. Search in the single turbo section for placement recommendations. I don’t know how long they will last, but the K rated probes are designed for those high temps, in fact some of the gauges cannot read as high as the probes measure.

If you tap the runners just be certain to remove any metal shavings or pieces that drop inside the manifold.

actually, i think i got mine from the second website from that list.

i'm waiting for someone to come out with an instant-reacting laser egt. couldn't be all that hard to build for an engineer...

I put mine where the stock O2 sensor was on my PFS downpipe. Works pretty well.
