I don't think there's much you can do with the center. I've seen it in person and it seemed to match.

 

^yeah i dont want to mess with the center brake light. it just doesnt look good with LEDs in it. i've seen a few people try, but i've never liked the results and i dont think its even worth messing with.

i think these led tails + the stock center brake light look great together, and i'm very happy with the result.



also, a quick update: my apartment is about to get a lot brighter. 8,310 LEDs brigher to be exact

Just a thought about the centers: how about using your opaque acrylic to make three LED bands across the center? In other words, diffuse the SMTs like you are doing with the LED rings in the taillights. That might look good.

I already have LEDs in the center area but the above might work.

 

i thought abut doing that, but i decided not to because i liked the 3-dimensional effect that is produced by having the center LEDs lit by a ring instead of a bulb. i actually tried this when i was playing around with led ring mounting location, but i thought it made the tails look too "flat" when the outer ring & center was lit up.

anyway it is possible but i would also need to order 60mm & 55mm acrylic circles. i suppose i could do this by request when i run the group buy, but i would rather not as i would likely need to change the design of the internal mounting structure.

in other news, i have been able to keep costs down by finding a manufacturer that will custom make the LED rings for me. while they are not going to use my own PCB layout, which i originally designed for thru-hoole LEDs, they will instead produce the led rings will use superbright surface mount LEDs. also the LEDs for the turn signal will be amber instead of white to prevent discoloration of the turn signal when lit). the tails are going to have a total of 18 extra surface-mount LEDs (compared to the prototype) in each of the brake circles to help make them brighter in direct sunlight.

i'll keep you guys posted. the group buy will open in approximately 1 month. at this point i'm waiting for parts to come from the suppliers and then i am going to do a couple of "production quality" conversions for a few people that i have already been talking with.

as i mentioned before, please DO NOT PM ME about this. i am not selling anything yet, and i don't plan to sell anything outside of the group buy. please respect this so we can keep this thread open!
