Problems with RX-7 motors...?

I'm kinda new to the RX-7 world just kinda have a few questions so no flames please I always hear these rumors about the engines needing rebuilds after like 40k miles (something with the apex seals?) Is this true or does it just happen when you mod the car with a BPU? I honestly think the RX-7 has one of the best stock bodies ever produced, but I always hear this stuff about the motors being extremely unreliable. Is this the case with the majority of the RX-7's out there?

yes...and anyone telling you otherwise is in denial. look at any used FD with 70K+ miles. 90% of the time, it has a rebuilt engine, or desperately needs one in the very near future.

if you find an immaculate FD with a good running engine, meaning good compression, and you mod it correctly, meaning 2 mod rule (2 mods then ECU)...you will be fine.

Suppose that I want to get an intake, a downpipe, a midpipe, a BOV, and a pulley kit. Would I need an ECU or something to provide more fuel? And also, is it a dumb idea to get a downpipe and midpipe without a cat-back?

Its an awsome idea if you get a downpipe and midpipe without catback exhaust for two reasons for one you wont have so much back pressure and heat build up of the exhaust gases produced by the motor, and you will have an increase of power and response of the turbos, plus with the increased flow of the exhaust gases you have increased the life of your engine. I think the best bang for the buck for power 2 mod rule is diffinintly the downpipe midpipe combo. You will also have a better sound than when the car was stock. Go for it your engine will thank you and by the way you dont need an ecu upgrade with a midpipe as long as you dont exceed 10 psi your in good hands. The only draw back of the midpipe is if the temp is cool, you may have boost creep, you can prevent that by getting a manual boost lever which you can buy from homeDepot

70xxx miles than a rebuild? I don't think so. My old engine had over 100xxx miles, and when the motor did die, it wasn't because of the apex seals going out. It was the plastic AST cracking and causing the motor to overheat. It seems the main reasons for engine failure isn't the engine itself, it's the stuff attached to it that fails. Radiators blowing out, hoses splitting, cat-converters clogging up, etc... The only way I can see the apex seals giving out is wen you overboost the engine, which seems to be a problem when a new rx-7 owner puts in a boost controller with out the proper mods. The rx-7 is a delicate car and needs to be modded properly with care. When I first bought my FD, I didn't know crap about it and did all the things you're not supposed to do. Heed my warning, search the forum for modification tips, education is the key to owning these cars. RX-7s aren't Supras where you can just turn up the boost and never look back. Good luck.
