Unhappy Pre-cat removal instructions?

This sucks! Why can't I just build a cumputer and replace the engine with it, uhg! So far i've removed the intakes to get to the air pump to remove the y-pipe. I can't remove the air pump! ok, i'm ready to go to the dealer at this point

Never go to the dealer! And if I recall correctly you don't have to remove the airpump.

your doing all of that to remove the precat?? all i did was remove all intake hoses. go underneath the car and you should be able to get to two of the studs. from above you should see one clearly, and have to find the last one with your hands then put a socket on it. don't take it to a dealer, the pre-cat is not that bad. nick

I can oly see two studs from both underneath and on top (& O2 sensor). Do the studs go in at a different angle then the DP? Anyone have any pics?

OK, I removed the two bolts from the bottom two studs.
1. How in the heck do you remove the O2 sensor? ...2mm turns at a time? 2. Do you drop the pre-cat first? 3. I still can't remove the y-pipe! Aaaahhhh stupid pipe, screw, stud, stupd thing, darn nabit, grrrr, ack

There is a socket made especially for the O2 sensor. That makes it much easier than using a monkey wrench.

I also replied at your Nopistons.com thread

Leave it in until you get the dp off, just unplug it and make sure it's free and not wire tied...

yeah, if I rember right unbolting the ABS heat shield and moving it out of the way lets you get to the top 2 DP studs

You can rent a socket form autozone for free that gets th o2 sensor out or oyu cna jsut buy one for ~$5 I actully removed mine prior to dropping the precat. but either way should work as long as you don't brake nothin. Might wanna go ahead and get a new o2 sensor, you can get a bosch universal that fits for about $17

You do not need to remove the ABS heat shield or the Y-pipe to do this. If you need me to come and help you, pm me.

BTW, you need the right tools e.g. a correctly sized extension

I drove to Rob's place and helped him get the pre cat off. All done without removing the ABS heat shield or the y-pipe. That went OK although we had to get some metric sockets( People, do NOT buy METRINCH - they really suck.)

However, the downpipe had some clearance issues and that is why Rob is so upset.

Hopefully, it will all work out.

Thanks MR Stock for the help! Very much appreciated

We'll have to "allegedly" setup a drag race with your GT-35/40 single and ArtGuy's M2 twin GT30's

if you had problems getting the downpipe on the studs, I just loosened and engine mount, and stuck a big crowbar under the engine with a piece of wood between the bar and the engine, and pried it up and slipped it over.

it can be. just juice up the bolts well with some sort of bolt and rust breaking compound before hand. I myself had to take a torch to the two bolts connected to the cat. Just take your time and if the bolts on the turbo manifold dont come off. LEt it be and take it to a professional
good luck

Steve

yeah...the bolts down there have a tendency to snap and then you gotta drill and break out the cutting torch.

none of that....

if its stuck...get a pro...

no sense breaking your back under the car in your garage...
