Power Steering Pump Squealing

Hi, I did a search on this and it seems others have remedied the PS pump squeaking by putting on a new PS pump pulley.

My question is why a new pulley would help. The pulley is a solid piece with no moving parts, so what is it about a new pulley that stops the squeaking?

BTW, I need a new pulley anyways because mine cracked while I was trying to remove it, but I'm also wondering if it's some bearings in the pump itself that are bad that is causing the noise. I hope I don't need a new pump, but if that's what it is, I guess I don't have a choice.

Thanks for your replies.

Belts were definitely tight enough - putting less tension would make it squeak less, more tension = more squeaking.

Fluid level is also good, I know the groaning sound the pump makes when the level is low and you try to turn, but this is squeaking has some kind of a rhythm and is also dependent on RPM.
