Power odometer with instrument panel out of the car?

I've been trying to get my odometer to illuminate with the dash outside the car so that I can record my mileage, but am having trouble getting it to do so. (Putting it back in the car is not an option right now).

The only thread I could find on the subject was this one... https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...ut-car-904057/

Grounding 1E and powering 2D powers the cluster in some way (gas gauge starts climbing and low coolant light illuminates), but nothing else happens. Then if I add power to 4E (like the thread above suggests), I don't get any new results.

Any help would be appreciated.

I experimented with this once, it's MUCH trickier than it initially seems. I had no luck, but I didn't put a ton of time into it.

So I put quite a bit of time into it and was finally able to get the odometer to light up...but no numbers. Messed with it more and still no luck. Said screw it, I'll just put it back in the car and reconnect enough wires to make it work.

Ends up, I basically had to rehook up every single connection to the body harness to get it to work. One particular engine harness ground turned out to be extremely important for numbers to display on the odometer.

Sorry I missed this. I could have helped. I've posted this info before and have even PM'd it to quite a few people that have asked for it, but I didn't know it was still hard info to find:

To power the cluster outside of the car and get full odometer functionality:

12V = 4E 2D 1H 2G 4B
GND = 1E 1G 2E 4D

These pins are related to the 4 connectors of C1-01. Diagrams of this connector, location of the pins, and wire colors can be found on page Z-44 and Z-80 of the FSM.

great info to have.

the question currently is what engine ground is it that affects the numbers not being displayed on the odometer....

Hmmm. Nobody likes to break out the FSM these days

1G, 2E, and 4D Get their Ground to 6 through the dimmer switch. The path is:
C1-01->X-18->I2-02->Ground 6 = behind the glove box area.

1E is the one I think y'all are worried about. It gets its ground through #3 which appears to be right behind the intake manifold (sorry if that's not what y'all call it (I'm a soulless rx7 owner)) It's path is:
C1-01 (instrument harness) -> X-17 (dash harness) ->X-14 (X-05) (emission harness) -> Ground #3.

If you need help tracing the path, their is no substitute for the FSM. However you can supplement it with my annotated connector thread:

I know this is an old thread but it is a new problem for me... LOL I just got done replacing every cap and diode in the speedometer/odometer board. Can some helpful soul tell me how to identify the 12v 4E 2D 1H 2G 4B and GND 1E 1G 2E 4D points if I'm facing the cluster (the rear part where the plugs go)? The car is not near me and I want to see if the odometer works. I replaced every cap and diode after all their lifespan is past due.

Everything you need to know is in the diagram above. Connector C1-01 consists of 4 plugs. Each plug starts with 1, 2, 3, or 4. Example, 4B is connector #4 (the rightmost connector in the diagram) position B. In the diagram 4B is the position with the Red/Black wire.

Since the car is at the body shop I can't look at the plugs, I only have the cluster here. If I had the car I could do it this way. "1" is easy to identify since its only 4 connections, "2" is also easy to identify but "3" and "4" both have 6 connections.

There are silk screen printed descriptions on several of the pcb traces on the back of the cluster that easily identify the connectors. Notably:

Connector #3 has "COOLANT" on one position down from the top left corner of the connector.
Connector #4 has "ILL+" on the top left corner of the connector

Looking at pages Z-42 (image above) shows that Connector 3 position 3D is the coolant level sensor which matches the orientation on the back of the cluster.

Page Z-80 confirms the position of 4B on connector 4.
