porting mistake......is it bad????

so after blown my coolant seals i decided to go single and get a half-bridge. so my friend works at a engine/machine shop and he does alot of porting on hondas and other domestic stuff, and he had a first gen. So i run the idea of the half -bridge by him and he says that he could do it. so i take my motor in and he gets started on it. bout a week later i get it back and he basically opened up the front and rear irons to a streetport, and half bridged the intermediate housing on both side. so am i screwed here or can i just get him to do the bridge on the front and rear and still have the one in the middle?

No, he did it backwards. The only thing you can do now is bridge the secondaries and run 1 piece apex seals with the full bridge.

Probably i am no engine builder though. You can pick up an iron for like $100-150 in good shape and since he made the mistake have him port it for free

Check the for sale section and or PM Japan2LA he has alot of engine parts from jspecs with low miles. Some of the engine builders here might have some too.

Just buy a replacement intermediate iron. I have several low mileage extras if you need one.

why are 1pc apex seals required? unless it's a super gigantic, cut into the rotor housing bridge I thought stock seals were fine

The 2pc short end can tilt and fall into the bridge, damaging the short apex piece. Even if you make the argument that this cant happen while the engine is running due to the pure speed of the rotor tips passing over the bridge, the fact is that it can happen during cranking which would be just as bad. I have heard of some people experimenting with using 1pc seals in a full bridge but never heard of it's success, which generally means it was a failure. In either case it is not really a chance worth taking.

Besides, with a full bridge you want to go very aggressive or it is not worth doing.

I think m'trix sells carbon (NA applications only) 1pc, and I know NRS ceramics are available in 1pc. I am not sure that atkins or RA offer 1pc seals, and I am 99% sure that mazda does not.

y wouldnt that intermediate iron not work because its a very small bridge and the corner has plenty of support.

Use it and tell us if you are so sure.

I just LOVE when people come on here with tech questions, I give an opinion based on knowledge and experience, and then get questioned about it and the OP wants to argue the technical merits. If you know so much, why are you here asking to begin with?

Who knows, you may prove me/history wrong. Let me know how it works.
