lol, my wife says they both look like they're smiling, but she does say that it looks better with the plate. I understand what you mean by natural body lines. I guess we all who love the front with the plate have gone accustomed to seeing it, and any of them without it just looks awkward.

+1 for 99spec still not sure if i like the plateless or the one with the plate better. if you gona go with the plateless then u have to have an emblem on there or its gona look naked.

Wow. I am fully astonished by the majority here. Just f'ing floored.

FD's (like beautiful women) have a sleek, flowing line that is just plain halted when you put a front plate on, molded in or otherwise. Would you staple a business card to a lady's forehead, or glue a credit card to a breast? (Legal notice: don't do it! If you must, be sure to ask first and get it in writing! )

Still, I just cannot believe folks really like a flat plane on a car renowned for not having any.

Anyway, I'll stay here totally boggled whle between two plate-less FDs parked REAL close to each other.........

the benefit though is that you can claim the '99 with a license plate is more practical. and really, how often can that be said about this car? lol

I don't know about you guys but a Smiing FD is a Healthy FD.

It's all prefference is'nt it? They look good weather it's 93 spec, 99spec with or without a plate.
I personally like both the 93+ and the 99 spec w/o the plate a little better than the other. Since this is a pole though I'll have to go with...

99 W/O the Brick.

'99 WITHOUT the front plate.

Having a front plate is like...like putting a big airbrake on the front of a shape otherwise designed for optimum aerodynamics. Or having an elegant nose with a big WART growing out of the tip.

Personally I'll pass on the WART tankyouberrymuch.

Crispy

PS TangoSore, love the anology: gorgeous women with business cards stapled to their foreheads LOL!

Ill be going 99 spec soon. I have the bumper but need to source the lip and maybe the reinforcement. So go 99 spec IMO.

I don't know. It might just be the picture, but when I look at these pics, I think the 93-95 looks better. Both pics are of my car.

Rich, I think your car is beautiful and I hope to upgrade to sequential stage 3's soon to put out power somewhere near it (before you go the big single route). The "box" is the only thing I would change but that is a matter of choice and opinion. I couldn't agree more on the motor comment! . . .and if it is a grin, it's a damn evil one that you better look at quick before it swallows you up! lol

Hmm. It is smiling a bit I guess. I don't have recent memory of a 99 spec front end w/o the "brick" and WITH an emblem. I'm now sold on the brickless look, although your car still looks dead sexy rich

For those that answered that the 99 spec looks better with the "brick" I think it's more of a matter of preserving the OEM design...not wanting to rock the boat of what is Mazda's last true sports car

Functionally and aesthetically, a plateless 99 makes the most sense

In my time of being here, I've never seen ptrhahn so angry

How does it make more sense?

If anything, its all by opinion and as choice as to what state you live in that requires a front tag.

There is no such thing as what makes more sense.

Some people like the plate holder, some dont.

Well actually let me rephrase it, ALOT of people love the plate holder, some dont.

Plain and simple. This shouldnt be an argument.

PS: In my opinion, plateless 99' just doesn't look right for some reason, Id rather go Mazdaspeed or something other then plateless 99'.

There's just something not right about your front end. The "plate brick" just disrupts the lines.

99 w/ plate holder.. It gives your eyes a center point to fix on. The rest of the car just flows endlessly. No plate holder and she looks like she's smiling. IMO..G

So would a big hood ornament, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I don't see anything wrong with this. It has no more of a "naked gap" than my 1993 front end. I think it's just a matter of people saying "mine is the best, because it's mine!". The 1999 spec might look like it's smiling, but the 1993 looks like it's drooling.
