Rice is a term that I associate with wanna be performance, the attempt to look fast and doing a poor job of it.
It's funny to me how things over the last decade have changed and how the focus went from the performance to the look of racing. Look how well companies like APC, Tenzo R and OBX that sell the look not the performance have done.
I also find it interesting how many of the people who are in the industry and in this forum now were not even driving back then.
In the early 90's we used to race civics and integras and hell if someone ran a high 14 in the 1/4 HOLY CRAP that was fast. This is when 16" rims were HUGE! 5Zigen DIV 3, Work RS Beta, Fins, Bang Vec, SSR type X, Mugen RSR how many people on this forum actually remember these.
Remember "we," import racers looked to Japan for all of our influences. Performace in Import cars was unheard of and we had to fight to earn respect of domestics.
Now how can a car like Tom Ngo's be considered anyting but rice. In fact that car is an insult to everything that the FD stands for.
Who ever posted pictures of the D Speed FD remember that car was built in the early 90's when Supra wings were cool. It's old...look at D.Speed designs now they have changed.
As far as RE's pink car that thing is also old. And remember this is RE...we all wish we could have our cars perform like any of his cars.
Yea as you can tell I'm from the older school of modifying. Those of you who remember my car know that I was very very much influenced by Japanese performance.
No one in the US had as much KnightSport or HKS products as I had in my car nor changed Volk rims as much as I did. Some may flame me but I bet that the ones who see it my way are the ones who have been doing this for years and have owned and modified many different import car.
Well that's my rant. I don't even know if it makes sence but I dislike ricers and I feel sad watching the industry change.

I mean i wouldn't want one but it does look kinda cool....well maybe if it had another set of windows to make it more limo looking then it wouldn't be "that" bad.
Deff isn't rice...i have no idea what to call it. "Someone with too much time and money?"

boy, that was nice collection of well thought out words RotaryKnight. *EDIT(what you had said at the top of the page)
i too am from the old school. i was wrenching on datsun z's, rx3's and 4's, XXsupra's,
celica's, etc. while most of these guys were still playing with transformers and voltron
while watching the smurfs or gi joe on tv. then, when a couple of our "more financially advanced" friends got a hold of a turboII or 300z and bolted on the HKS parts... ohhhh those were the days.
i remember when some of my peers would do nothing but frown and talk **** about our cars
with engines that were smaller than 300 cubic inches while sitting behind the wheel of their
primered mustang's, barracuda's, and vega's while ours were ALWAYS washed, waxed, and ready to go to an obon at a moments notice.
anyone that can remember gawkin over those guys with the magnetic ssr center lock key
hanging out of their pockets knows where i'm comming from. and if you know what epsilon,
gotti, auto bahn, and hayashi's are, then you know where i'm comming from. and you know where these "roots" came from if you've BEEN to the nisei cruise, ocbc, nishii, or know what a gardena car is. yes, back in the day things were done tastefully by those involved and EVERYONE knew it. it's "others" that have made it what it is today.
this subject/words regarding "rice, ricey, riced out" etc. has gone waaay too far since many of you don't even realize that this very forum, enthusiasm, and vehicle you drive, revolves around a country whose staple is "rice". ever stop to think where that "dope" multimedia system in your car came from if you have one?? or that tv you switch on after a hard days work most likely was made in the same place where these "trends" started. why would you continue the trends and patronise the products from a place that there isn't much respect for with such words and phrases?? it's not all that interesting if you're on the other end of the stick.
bottom line: you're talking about, driving, and getting all excited about a Japanese car. the very car you drive is "rice" by you own definitions.
change the word. change the mentality.

I actually remember Tom's car before it had any stickers on it, anyone remember SS3? Back then Chris had the biggest stickers around . He had the biggest turbo around too but I digress... I don't know what happened to Tom's car, it caught the sponsor disease...

That's like painting dogs playing poker on the walls of the Sistine chapel.
