Please Help, Weird RPM Fluctuations

hi, this is for my friends 93 RX7. His car, when you first start it, when the engine is cool, the RPM fluctuates from 2-1000, then suddenly it drops and the engine dies. When you start it for the second time, right after it dies, the car will be idel at around 1000. We really don't know what is going on. Any ideas would be great! Thanks

we can get the car to stay on the first time you start it if you rev the car a little so the RPM doesn't drop too low. But without the revving, the engine always dies on the first start.

Could be a problem with the AWS or the idle speed controller. Try starting the car while it's in gear, and see if the problem goes away.

Accelerated warm-up system. It sends your rpms up to 3,000 at first startup if you don't leave it in gear, or tap the gas. It's to warm up the engine, and cats quicker, but is generally thought be a crappy idea.
